Domo to Power BI migration with every source reconnected
Domo to Power BI migration moves your dashboards, data flows and alerts from one cloud platform into Power BI inside your own Microsoft tenant. Since the two products share no file format, each card needs a fresh build. One of our consultants traces every dataset back to its original system first, because the new reports should read from the source and not from the old platform.
- Sources traced to origin
- Data flows rebuilt cleanly
- Figures checked card by card

How does a Domo to Power BI migration work?
A cloud BI platform often holds more than charts. It also stores copies of your data and the steps that shape them. So a move has two halves. One half rebuilds what people see. The other half rebuilds the plumbing underneath.
We start with the plumbing. Each dataset came from somewhere, such as a CRM, a finance system or a spreadsheet. Therefore we map every one to its origin and check how Power BI can reach it. Microsoft's connector list tells us which sources have a documented connector.
After that, the visible layer follows. Cards become visuals on report pages, and pages gather into an app. Because Power BI encourages one shared model under many reports, the final estate is usually smaller and easier to maintain. For example, separate Domo cards for each channel can merge into one Power BI marketing dashboard.

What we rebuild when you leave Domo
Six kinds of content need attention, and each has a clear Power BI counterpart.
Datasets
We reconnect each dataset to its origin system. Then Power BI refreshes from the source on a schedule you control.
Data flows
Transformation steps move into Power Query or a dataflow. We also simplify them, since old flows tend to collect clutter.
Calculated fields
Card-level formulas become DAX measures in one model. As a result, every report shares the same definition.
Cards and pages
Each card turns into a visual. However, we group them by the decision they support instead of copying the old layout.
Alerts and schedules
Power BI offers data alerts and email subscriptions, so people keep the prompts they depend on.
Access rules
Group and row policies map to workspace roles and row-level security. We test them with real user accounts.
Why consider a Domo to Power BI migration at all?
Both products are capable, and each fits certain teams. A company that lives in Microsoft 365 often prefers Power BI, because it sits beside Excel, Teams and SharePoint. Licensing through an existing Microsoft agreement can also simplify purchasing.
Ownership is a second reason. With Power BI, the model, the reports and the refresh logic sit in your tenant. So your own analysts can extend them with skills that are easy to hire. Still, a platform change costs effort, and we say so plainly when the case is weak.
For that reason the first call looks at your goals. If the present setup works and the contract suits you, staying may be the right answer. Otherwise we outline a phased move that keeps both systems live until the new one proves itself. If the platform choice is still open, our Power BI vs Domo comparison sets out the trade-offs.
Common mistakes in a Domo to Power BI migration
Most failed moves share the same few causes, so we plan against each of them.
- Copying every card without checking use
- Pointing Power BI at exported files forever
- Rebuilding formulas inside each report
- Forgetting scheduled email reports
- Skipping a side-by-side number check
- Switching all users on one day
Steps we follow for a move off Domo
Four stages keep the work visible, and a demo each week shows what changed.
Assessment call
First you describe the estate and your reasons in a free thirty minute call. We then say whether we can help.
Source and card inventory
Next we list datasets, flows and cards by use. The written quote names what moves and what retires.
Model and pilot pages
One business area goes first. Because it exercises every source type, later areas move faster.
Parallel run
Finally both systems run together for a while. People switch once the figures agree and the pages feel familiar.
Leaving Domo for Power BI: what buyers ask
Can Power BI connect straight to Domo during the migration?
We prefer not to depend on that. Microsoft's connector list does not give us a documented native route, so we reconnect to the original systems instead. During the overlap, an export can fill a short gap. However, the finished reports should read from the source, since that removes a whole layer of risk.
Do all Domo cards need a Power BI version?
Rarely. Usage data normally shows that a small share of cards gets most of the views. So we rank content first and agree a cut-off with you. Unused cards go to an archive list. That keeps the project lean, and it also leaves users with a cleaner set of reports.
What replaces Domo data flows in Power BI?
Power Query handles most shaping steps, either inside a semantic model or in a shared dataflow. For heavier work, Microsoft Fabric adds pipelines and a lakehouse. We choose the lightest option that fits your volume. Then we document each step, because undocumented flows caused trouble in the old setup too.
Will users need training after the switch to Power BI?
A little helps a lot. The ideas are similar, but filters, drill paths and exports work differently. Therefore we run a short walkthrough for each group and leave a one-page guide. People who build their own content get a longer session on the shared model.
Who runs the project?
Our consultants run it. Power BI Agency is a division of Sataware Technologies and independent of Microsoft and of other vendors. We work online. Everything we build sits in your tenant, and we answer messages within 2 hours. Your Domo cards and datasets are rebuilt as Power BI reports and semantic models.
