An executive dashboard in Power BI built for the leadership meeting
An executive dashboard in Power BI is one page that shows leaders where the business stands. It also shows where results drift and who owns the fix. It answers the weekly questions without an export to Excel first. So we agree a short list of measures with each executive and trace every figure to its source system. Then we build the page inside your own Microsoft tenant.
- Measures agreed in writing
- Drill-through to detail
- Built in your tenant

What belongs on an executive dashboard in Power BI?
Less than most people expect. A leadership page earns its space with a handful of headline measures, each shown against target, so nobody does mental arithmetic in the meeting. Trend lines add direction, and a short exceptions table names the regions or products outside tolerance.
Everything else moves one click away. Drill-through takes a leader from a revenue card to the operating report that managers already use, filtered to that item. As a result, the top page stays readable at a glance, while the detail is still there for anyone who asks why.
This is a narrower job than general power bi dashboard development, which covers reports for every team. When the finance chief needs a page of their own, the power bi cfo dashboard goes deeper on cash, margin and working capital.

Six elements that earn a place on a leadership page
Space on a leadership page is scarce, so every element has to justify itself.
Headline KPIs against target
A few cards, each with the current value, the target and the gap, so the meeting starts from the same facts.
Variance to plan and prior year
Side-by-side comparisons that show whether a movement is seasonal, planned or a real problem.
Trend lines with context
Enough history to see direction, with reference lines for budget or forecast instead of a wall of monthly bars.
Exceptions with an owner
Regions, products or accounts outside tolerance, each tagged to the person accountable for it.
Drill-through to operating reports
A right-click on any number lands on the detailed page your managers already use, filtered to that item.
A line of written commentary
A short note kept up by finance or the business owner, so the page explains the why as well as the what.
Why do leadership dashboards stop being opened?
Most fail for the same few reasons. They carry thirty visuals when the board looks at five. The revenue figure differs from the one finance quotes. Or the page loads so slowly that an assistant starts pasting screenshots into slides. After that, nobody touches the live report again.
So we treat each measure definition as the real deliverable. Before any design work, we write down what counts as revenue, margin, headcount or backlog. We also record which system is the source of truth and how late adjustments work. Each executive then signs off that list. When the page goes live, the numbers match the ones already discussed in the room.
Speed matters too. A leadership page usually sits on a star-schema model with lean measures. As a result, it opens quickly on a laptop, a phone or inside a Teams meeting.
Power BI service features we set up for each executive
The page is only half the job, because how it reaches each leader matters as much.
- A Power BI app with an audience for each leadership role
- A metrics scorecard that links targets to the visuals behind them
- Email subscriptions that deliver a snapshot before the meeting
- Data alerts on KPI cards when a threshold is crossed
- A phone layout for the Power BI mobile app
- A Teams tab so the page sits where the meeting happens

Short video calls with each leader about the decisions they make and the numbers they distrust today.
Agree the measure catalog
A written list of definitions, sources and owners, reviewed and approved by the people who will read the page.
Prototype on real data

The app, subscriptions and alerts go live, and your analysts receive the model notes to maintain it without us.
Executive dashboard in Power BI: common questions
How many KPIs should a leadership page show?
As few as the leadership team can act on. A long list usually means nobody has agreed priorities yet. So we push back gently and move secondary measures to drill-through pages. The top page then stays readable at a glance, and the detail still sits one click away for anyone who needs it.
Can the page pull from several systems at once?
Yes. Finance, CRM, ERP and HR data can feed one semantic model, as long as everyone agrees which system owns each figure. We write that agreement into the measure catalog. Then, when two systems disagree, the catalog settles the answer instead of a debate in the meeting.
Will board members need a license to view it in Power BI?
Usually, yes. As of October 2026, every viewer needs a Pro or Premium Per User license. The exception is content on a Fabric F64 capacity or larger, or a Premium P1 or larger. Below F64, free users cannot open shared content. We do not resell licenses, so we simply explain which option fits your audience.
Can each executive see only their own division in Power BI?
Yes. Row-level security limits a divisional leader to their own numbers, while the chief executive sees everything. All of it comes from the same report and model. Because the rules live in the model, nobody needs a separate copy of the page for each division, and access changes stay simple.
