OBIEE to Power BI migration that keeps the numbers people trust
OBIEE to Power BI migration replaces Oracle's enterprise reporting platform with Power BI reports and a semantic model in your Microsoft tenant. The job is a rebuild, because no tool converts one product into the other. One of our consultants inventories what people use, redesigns the shared business layer and then proves each total against the old system before anyone switches.
- Inventory before rebuild
- Totals proven side by side
- Oracle sources stay put

What does an OBIEE to Power BI migration involve?
An older enterprise platform usually holds three things. First, a central repository defines the business layer, with its subject areas, joins and calculations. Second, there are analyses and dashboards that people open each day. Third, there are formatted reports that go out as documents.
Each of these has a home in Power BI. The business layer becomes a semantic model with relationships and DAX measures. Dashboards become interactive reports. Meanwhile, fixed-layout documents become paginated reports, which Power BI supports for print-ready output.
However, the shapes differ. So we do not copy screen by screen. Instead we ask what question each page answers, and we build the clearest Power BI page for that question.

Six workstreams in a move away from OBIEE
Every workstream has its own line in the written quote, so you can see where the effort goes.
Usage inventory
We list every dashboard and analysis with its last use. As a result, unused content drops out before anyone rebuilds it.
Business layer redesign
Subject areas turn into star-schema models. Then each measure gets one definition that every report shares.
Oracle source connection
Power BI reads Oracle databases through a documented connector. A gateway links the service to servers on your network.
Reports moved to Power BI
Interactive pages replace old dashboards, and paginated reports replace the formatted documents that still matter.
Security mapping
Old data filters by user or group become row-level security roles, so each person still sees only permitted rows.
Reconciliation
We run old and new side by side. Because the totals must agree, every gap gets an explanation or a fix.
Why do companies start an OBIEE to Power BI migration?
Reasons vary, but a few come up often. Many firms already pay for Microsoft 365, so Power BI sits close to Teams, Excel and SharePoint. Business users also like to explore data on their own, and Power BI suits that habit well.
Support is another driver. An aging on-premises platform needs servers, patches and scarce skills. Moving reports to a cloud service removes part of that load. Still, the older platform has real strengths, such as a mature central model, and a fair plan respects them.
Therefore we begin with an honest look. Some reports move quickly. Others depend on complex logic and need more care. A few may be better left alone until the source system itself changes. Finance pages such as a Power BI trial balance report are usually good early candidates, since their totals are easy to check.
Risks an OBIEE to Power BI migration must manage
These six risks appear on most projects, so the plan names an owner for each one.
- Calculations hidden deep in the repository
- Reports nobody has opened for years
- Row limits that users relied on
- Scheduled deliveries to email lists
- Slow queries against large Oracle tables
- Users who expect the old layout
How our migration from OBIEE runs
The work moves in four stages, and a weekly demo shows progress throughout.
Free assessment
First we spend thirty minutes on your current estate and goals. You then know whether the project makes sense.
Inventory and scope
Next we count content, rank it by use and agree what moves. The written quote fixes that scope.
Pilot subject area
One subject area goes first, because it tests the model, the gateway and the security design together.
Switch to Power BI
Finally the remaining areas follow in waves. Users switch after each area passes its side-by-side check.
Moving from OBIEE to Power BI: frequent questions
Can a tool convert OBIEE content to Power BI automatically?
Not in a way we would trust for a whole estate. The two products store logic differently, so a rebuild gives cleaner results. However, we reuse what we can. For example, the SQL behind an analysis often guides the new query. That saves time while still producing a proper Power BI model.
Does the data stay in Oracle after the migration to Power BI?
It can. Power BI connects to Oracle databases, either by importing data on a schedule or by querying it live. So the warehouse may stay where it is. Later, the data may also move to Microsoft Fabric, but that is a separate decision with its own plan.
What happens to pixel-perfect OBIEE reports?
Power BI offers paginated reports for that need. They produce fixed layouts that print or export cleanly, such as invoices and statements. We rebuild only the documents people still use. Because many old layouts have no readers left, the list often shrinks during the inventory.
How do you prove the new numbers are right?
We compare them with the old system for the same period and filters. Each measure gets a test case, and your subject experts review the results. When totals differ, we trace the cause. Sometimes the old report held an error, and then your team decides which answer stands.
Who does the migration work?
Consultants from Power BI Agency do it, online, inside your own Microsoft tenant. We are a small team and a division of Sataware Technologies. We are also independent of both Microsoft and Oracle. Your files and models stay with you when the project ends.
