Qlik to Power BI migration planned as a rebuild, not a copy
Qlik to Power BI migration is the process of moving QlikView documents or Qlik Sense apps into Power BI semantic models and reports. No tool converts one into the other, so each app needs a considered rebuild. Power BI Agency reviews your load scripts and expressions, remodels them inside your own tenant and checks every total against the Qlik original.
- Rebuilt, never auto-converted
- Totals matched to Qlik
- Apps ranked before moving

What does a Qlik to Power BI migration really involve?
Both products are capable, but they think differently. Qlik loads data through a script and links tables by matching field names. Its associative engine then lets a user click any value and see what relates to it.
Power BI takes another route. Power Query shapes the data, and a model defines explicit relationships, usually in a star pattern. Measures use DAX instead of Qlik expressions. So a move means translating ideas, not files.
That is why we call a Qlik to Power BI migration a rebuild. First we read what each app does. Then we design a model that gives the same answers in the way Power BI expects. For example, a Qlik pricing app can become a Power BI pricing analysis page with the same margin logic.

How Qlik concepts map to Power BI
The pairs below are rough equivalents, and each one needs judgment in practice.
| In Qlik | Closest Power BI concept | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Load script | Power Query | Logic may belong in the source instead |
| Associative data model | Semantic model with relationships | Relationships must be explicit |
| Chart expressions | DAX measures | Central measures replace repeated formulas |
| Set analysis | DAX filter functions | Filter context behaves differently |
| Section access | Row-level security | Rules need a fresh design and test |
| Sheets and objects | Report pages and visuals | Layouts rarely copy one to one |
| Streams or spaces | Workspaces and apps | Access groups need remapping |
Why do companies move from Qlik to Power BI?
The reasons vary, and none of them means Qlik is a poor product. Often a company already pays for Microsoft 365 and wants reporting close to Teams, Excel and SharePoint. Therefore one platform looks simpler to run.
Skills play a part as well. Some teams find more analysts who know Power BI in their hiring market. Others want to standardize after a merger left them with two tools.
However, staying put can be right too. If your Qlik apps work well and users like them, a move brings cost without clear gain. We say that on the assessment call when it applies. If the platform choice is still open, see our Power BI vs Qlik Sense comparison first.
What we check before a Qlik to Power BI migration starts
These six checks decide the order of work and expose the hard parts early.
- Which apps people still open
- How complex each load script is
- Where set analysis carries business rules
- Which sources the scripts read
- How section access restricts rows
- Which apps can simply retire
How our Qlik to Power BI migration process runs
We move apps in waves, and each wave follows the same four stages.
Inventory of Qlik apps
First we list every app with its owner and usage, so unused ones drop out before any effort.
Written scope
The quote then names the apps in the wave and the sources behind them.
Rebuild in Power BI
We remodel each app inside your tenant and show it beside the Qlik version at a weekly demo.
Parallel run
Finally, both versions run together while users compare totals, and then the old app retires.
Questions on moving from Qlik to Power BI
Can Qlik apps convert to Power BI automatically?
No, and we would be wary of any such claim. The two products store logic in different forms, so a person has to read each script and expression. Some steps repeat across apps, which speeds up later waves. Still, every app gets a review and a test against the original.
Will Power BI behave like Qlik's associative selections?
Not exactly. Power BI offers cross-filtering and cross-highlighting between visuals, and slicers filter a page. However, the green, white and gray selection pattern is specific to Qlik. So we show users early how the new reports respond, since habits take a little time to change.
Does a migration from Qlik to Power BI cover both QlikView and Qlik Sense?
Yes. QlikView documents and Qlik Sense apps share the script language, so the review approach is similar. The front ends differ, though. Therefore we look at layout needs for each one separately and agree which pages deserve a redesign instead of a like-for-like copy.
What happens to our Qlik licenses?
That is between you and Qlik. We do not resell licenses for either product, so we have no stake in the timing. During planning we ask when your current term ends. Then we order the waves so the apps that matter most move well before that date.
Who does the work, and where?
