Tableau to Power BI migration with every number checked

Tableau to Power BI migration is the work of rebuilding Tableau workbooks, data sources and permissions as Power BI reports, semantic models and workspaces. No tool converts a workbook file for you, so each dashboard needs a planned rebuild. One of our consultants maps what exists, moves the logic into DAX and Power Query, then checks every figure against the original before anyone switches over.

  • Workbook inventory first
  • Numbers matched to Tableau
  • Built in your tenant

What does a Tableau to Power BI migration involve?

The two products solve the same problem in different ways. Tableau keeps much of its logic inside each workbook. Power BI, however, works best when one shared semantic model feeds many reports. So a good move is a redesign, not a copy.

First we list every workbook, data source and schedule on your Tableau site. Then we ask who still opens each one. Many teams find that a large share of old dashboards has no readers left. Because of that, the list to rebuild is often shorter than people fear.

After that the real work begins. Calculated fields become DAX measures, and Tableau Prep flows become Power Query steps. User filters turn into row-level security roles. Finally, we place each rebuilt report beside its Tableau original and compare the totals line by line.

How Tableau concepts map to Power BI

Most Tableau objects have a close match, but few of them move across one for one.

Workbooks and dashboards

A workbook becomes a report with pages. We regroup sheets around the decisions people make, so pages stay short and clear.

Calculated fields

Each calculation turns into a DAX measure in the model. As a result, one definition serves every report that needs it.

Level of detail expressions

These need the most care, because DAX handles context differently. We rewrite each one and test it against known totals.

Published data sources

Shared sources and extracts become semantic models. Then several reports reuse one model instead of loading their own copy.

Tableau Prep flows

Cleaning steps move into Power Query or a dataflow, so the shaping logic sits in one place your team can read.

Sites, projects and user filters

Projects map to workspaces and apps, while user filters become security roles that follow each person across reports.

Why do companies move from Tableau to Power BI?

Tableau is a strong product, and plenty of teams should stay on it. Still, some companies already run Microsoft 365, Teams and Azure. For them, a second reporting platform means a second set of licenses, logins and skills to maintain.

There is also the Excel factor. Finance teams often live in spreadsheets, and Power BI lets them analyze a shared model from inside Excel. In addition, Microsoft Fabric now places data engineering and reporting on one platform, so the wider data plan may point the same way.

None of this makes the move free. A rebuild takes effort, and people need time to learn a new tool. So we say plainly when the case is weak, for example when a few well-loved dashboards serve a small group. If the decision is still open, our Power BI vs Tableau comparison covers it first. Hiring funnels are a good test case, since a Tableau workbook and a Power BI recruitment dashboard should show the same totals.

Signs a Tableau to Power BI migration makes sense

When several of these apply, the move usually earns back its effort.

  • Most staff already hold Microsoft 365 accounts
  • Two reporting tools show different totals
  • Tableau renewal is due and under review
  • Finance wants live models inside Excel
  • A Microsoft Fabric rollout is on the roadmap
  • Few people still maintain the old workbooks

How our Tableau to Power BI migration runs

The work moves through four stages, and you approve each one before the next begins.

  1. Inventory and usage check

We list workbooks, sources and schedules, then mark which ones people still open. Unused items leave the plan early.

  2. Model design

Next we design shared semantic models around your business subjects, so reports stop carrying private copies of the same logic.

  3. Rebuild and compare

Each report goes up beside its original. Because both run on the same data, any gap in a total shows at once.

  4. Switch over and coach

Finally, users move in groups, and short sessions show them where familiar views now live. Tableau stays on until you say stop.

Tableau migration questions, answered plainly

Can Power BI open a Tableau workbook directly?

No. Power BI cannot read a Tableau workbook file, and no reliable converter exists for the visuals or the calculations. Each report therefore needs a rebuild by hand. However, the underlying data sources usually connect to Power BI without trouble, so the rebuild covers logic and layout, not the data itself.

How long does a Tableau migration to Power BI take?

It depends on how many workbooks remain after the usage check and how complex their calculations are. So we do not quote a duration before we see the inventory. After the free 30-minute assessment, the written quote states the scope and the order of work, and weekly demos show progress against it.

Will the Power BI reports look the same as the Tableau dashboards?

They will show the same numbers, but the layout often improves. Some Tableau chart types have no exact twin, so we choose the closest clear visual instead. We also use the move to remove clutter. Before anything changes, you see a draft page and decide how close to the old look it should stay.

Do both tools run side by side during the move?

Yes, and we recommend it. Running both for a while lets people compare totals and build trust in the new reports. Then each group switches when its reports pass the comparison. As a result, nobody loses a dashboard they rely on before its replacement is ready and checked.

Who owns the files after the migration?

You do. All the work happens inside your own Microsoft tenant, so every model, report and note stays with you. Power BI Agency is a division of Sataware Technologies and is independent of Microsoft. We also do not resell licenses, so our advice on which plan to buy carries no sales motive.
