Compliance dashboards

A Power BI compliance dashboard that is ready for audit

A Power BI compliance dashboard is a report that tracks obligations, controls, policy sign-offs and audit findings across the business. It shows which controls passed their last test, which are overdue and who owns each gap. Compliance officers then spend less time gathering evidence. Our consultants work inside your Microsoft tenant through accounts you control, and we do not copy data to our own systems.

  • Control test status
  • Findings by age
  • Policy sign-off rates

What problem does a Power BI compliance dashboard solve?

Compliance work produces a great deal of evidence. Test results sit in one tool, policy sign-offs in another and audit findings in a tracker. Before each audit, somebody gathers it all by hand.

That effort repeats every cycle, and it hides the real status in between. So a control can fail in March and nobody notices until the September review. A shared report closes that gap, because it reads the sources on a schedule.

The page also speaks to two audiences. Executives want a simple status by regulation or framework. Control owners, however, want their own list with dates. One model serves both, with different pages and access.

Status views that compliance officers rely on

Each view follows the structure of your control framework, so nothing needs translating for an auditor.

Control test results

Show passed, failed and untested controls by framework area. Then a weak area is obvious without a meeting.

Overdue tests

List controls whose test date has passed, because an untested control proves nothing.

Open findings by age

Group audit findings by severity and days open. Old high-severity items rise to the top.

Policy attestation

Track who has read and signed each policy, by department, so reminders reach the right people.

Regulatory calendar

Show filings and deadlines ahead. Also mark each one with its owner and current status.

Incident and breach log

Count reported events by type and time to resolve, since regulators often ask for both.

How does the report stay audit-ready all year?

Audit readiness depends on evidence, not on charts. So each status on the page links back to the record that supports it. A reader can drill from a framework area to a control, and from there to its last test.

History matters as well. An auditor may ask what the status was at a past date. Therefore the model keeps period snapshots, and a date filter rolls the whole report back in time.

Access follows the same discipline. Row-level security limits each owner to their controls, while the compliance team sees everything. Workspace activity also appears in Microsoft's activity and audit logs, which helps when you need to show who viewed what. For tenant-wide rules on workspaces, labels and access, see power bi governance.

Weak points in a Power BI compliance dashboard

These faults are common, and each one can embarrass a team in front of an auditor.

  • A green status with no evidence behind it
  • Controls mapped to no owner at all
  • Findings closed without a verification step
  • No record of past status for earlier periods
  • Sign-off rates that still include former staff
  • Several frameworks tracked in separate files

How we set up a Power BI compliance dashboard

Four stages, each with a weekly demo, take the project from scattered trackers to one trusted report.

  1. Map the framework

First we list obligations, controls and owners in one structure, even when several regulations overlap.

  2. Connect the evidence

Then we link test results, sign-offs and findings from the tools that already hold them.

  3. Add time and trace

Next we build snapshots and drill-through, because auditors ask about the past as well as today.

  4. Assign access

Finally we set roles for owners, compliance staff and executives, and test each with a real account.

Compliance tracking in Power BI: common questions

Can a Power BI compliance dashboard cover several frameworks?

Yes. Many controls satisfy more than one regulation or standard. So the model maps each control to every requirement it supports. Then a single test result updates the status for all of them. That mapping takes effort at the start, but it removes duplicate testing and duplicate reporting later.

Does a Power BI dashboard make us compliant?

No, and no honest consultant would say so. A report shows status; it does not perform controls. However, it makes gaps visible early and shortens audit preparation. Your compliance and legal teams still decide what each regulation requires. We build the view that helps them manage it.

Where does the data for a compliance report in Power BI come from?

It comes from wherever you track controls today. That may be a governance tool, a list in Microsoft 365, a ticket system or a set of spreadsheets. We check each source and its access route first. If the trackers are loose files, we help you move them to a structured list.

Can auditors use the Power BI compliance report directly?

They can, if you grant them access. Some teams give auditors a read-only role for the audit period. Others export the pages they need. In both cases the drill-through to evidence saves many email requests. We design the audit page with that use in mind.
