A Power BI energy consumption dashboard for every site
A Power BI energy consumption dashboard is a report that shows how much electricity, gas and water each building uses, by meter and by hour. It sets that use against weather, output and floor area, so sites compare fairly. Facility teams then see where energy leaks away. Our consultants build it in your own Microsoft tenant under a written quote.
- Use by site and meter
- Weather-adjusted view
- Cost beside consumption

What does a Power BI energy consumption dashboard reveal?
A utility bill gives one number for a whole month. That figure hides almost everything useful. It cannot show that a chiller ran all weekend or that lights stayed on overnight.
Interval data changes the picture. When meters report by the hour, the page shows the shape of each day. Then a flat line at night, where a dip should be, points straight at waste.
The report also makes comparison fair. For example, a large store will always use more than a small one. So the model divides use by floor area or by units produced, and ranks sites on that basis instead.

Energy measures that guide facility teams
Each measure ties back to meter readings and invoices, so finance and facilities read the same figures.
Use per square foot
Divide consumption by floor area for each building. Then sites of different sizes share one scale.
Use per unit produced
Set energy against output for plants, because a busy month should not look like a wasteful one.
Base load
Show the lowest steady demand overnight. A high base load often means equipment never switches off.
Peak demand
Track the highest demand in each billing period, since many tariffs charge for the peak as well as the total.
Cost by utility
Put spend next to consumption for electricity, gas and water. However, keep tariff changes visible.
Variance to baseline
Compare this period with a baseline year, adjusted for weather, so savings stand on firm ground.
Where does energy data come from, and how clean is it?
Three kinds of source are common. Utility invoices give cost and monthly totals. Smart meters and sub-meters give interval readings. A building management system adds equipment detail where one exists.
These sources rarely agree at first. Meters drop readings, invoices cover odd date ranges and units differ. So we convert everything to common units and flag gaps instead of hiding them. Where the gaps run deep, power bi data quality services can fix them at the source.
Weather needs a place too. Heating and cooling follow the outside temperature, so a cold month uses more gas for honest reasons. Therefore the model holds degree days for each site, and the adjusted view removes that effect.
Mistakes in a Power BI energy consumption dashboard
An energy report misleads quickly when any of these slip through.
- Comparing months without adjusting for weather
- Mixing kilowatt hours with other units unconverted
- Treating estimated bills as real readings
- Ranking sites by total use, not intensity
- Filling meter gaps without marking them
- Ignoring changes in floor area or opening hours
How we deliver a Power BI energy consumption dashboard
You join a weekly demo, so the facility team shapes the pages as they form.
List meters and sites
First we build a clean register of sites, meters and what each meter serves.
Load and align readings
Then we bring invoices and interval data into one model with shared units and calendars.
Add context
Next we attach floor area, output and weather, because raw use means little without them.
Review with operators
Finally we walk the pages with the people who run the buildings and adjust what they question.
Energy reporting in Power BI: what facility managers ask
Can a Power BI energy consumption dashboard use smart meter data?
Yes, as long as we can reach the readings. Some meter platforms offer an API or a database, and others send files on a schedule. We confirm the route before we quote. Then the model stores hourly or finer readings and sums them as needed. Large volumes may call for incremental refresh.
How does a Power BI energy dashboard adjust for weather?
The model holds heating and cooling degree days for each site. It then compares use per degree day, not raw use. So a harsh winter no longer looks like a failure, and a mild one no longer looks like a win. We explain the method on the page, because readers should know what adjusted means.
Can the energy consumption report show cost as well as use?
Yes. Invoices give the cost, and the model links them to the same sites and periods as the meter data. However, tariffs change, so a rising bill may not mean rising use. The page therefore shows both lines together. Finance and facilities can then agree on the cause.
Does a Power BI energy report need sub-meters first?
No. Many organizations begin with invoices and main meters alone. That already supports site ranking, trends and cost. Later, sub-meters add detail by floor or by equipment, and the model has room for them. We would sooner deliver a useful first version than wait for perfect metering.
