Power BI report vs dashboard: pages or pinned tiles?
Power BI report vs dashboard is a common point of confusion, because people use the two words loosely. In the product, they mean different things. A report is a set of interactive pages built on one semantic model. A dashboard is a single canvas of tiles pinned from reports, and it exists only in the service. Knowing the difference saves rework later.

Power BI report vs dashboard: what does each term mean?
A report holds one or more pages. Each page carries charts, tables and slicers that respond to clicks. When a reader selects a bar, the other visuals on the page filter to match. Authors usually build reports in the desktop application.
A dashboard is simpler. It is one screen of tiles, and each tile shows a visual pinned from a report. Clicking a tile opens the report behind it. Because tiles can come from several reports, a dashboard can gather headline numbers from across the business.
In everyday speech, many people call any screen of charts a dashboard. That habit is harmless, but it helps to be exact when you plan a build.

How do the two compare feature by feature?
These are the differences that matter most in daily use.
| Feature | Report | Dashboard |
|---|---|---|
| Pages | One or many | A single canvas |
| Data behind it | One semantic model | Tiles from one or many reports |
| Where it gets built | Desktop or the service | The service only |
| Slicers and filters | Yes | No |
| Cross-highlighting between visuals | Yes | No |
| Data alerts | No | Yes, on certain tile types |
| Best use | Exploring and answering questions | Monitoring a few key numbers |
When is a Power BI report the right choice?
Choose a report when readers need to ask follow-up questions. For example, a sales manager sees revenue fall and wants to know which region caused it. Slicers, drill-through and tooltips let that manager find the answer alone.
Reports also suit detailed work. Several pages can tell a story in order, from summary to detail. Bookmarks and navigation buttons then guide the reader through it.
So most of the real content in a tenant lives in reports. If you only build one thing, build this.
When does a Power BI dashboard add value?
A dashboard helps people who want a glance, not an analysis. An executive can open one screen each morning and see sales, cash and service levels together. Since each tile links back to its report, detail stays one click away.
Alerts are the other reason. A reader can set a threshold on a card or gauge tile. Then the service sends a notice when the number crosses it. Therefore nobody has to check the screen all day.
However, dashboards carry less weight than they once did. A well-designed summary page inside a report now covers many of the same needs, and apps make it easy to reach.
Power BI report vs dashboard: how should you decide?
Four questions settle it for almost every request.
Ask what the reader does next
If the reader will filter and dig, that points to a report. When a glance is enough, tiles may do.
Count the sources
Then check whether the numbers span several models. Only pinned tiles can sit side by side from different reports.
Check for alerts
If someone needs a notice when a value crosses a line, plan a tile for that figure.
Start with the report
Finally, build the report first in every case. Pinning takes minutes afterwards, so nothing is lost.
Power BI report vs dashboard questions readers ask
Can a Power BI dashboard exist without a report?
In most cases, no. Tiles usually come from report visuals, so a report has to exist first. A few tile types, such as text boxes, images and answers from the question box, can stand alone. Still, a useful dashboard depends on solid reports and a sound semantic model underneath.
Why does a Power BI dashboard have no slicers?
The design keeps it as a fixed overview. Each tile shows the visual as it looked when someone pinned it, with its filters at that moment. For interactive filtering, the reader clicks through to the report. If people keep asking for slicers, that is a sign they need a report page instead.
Do tiles update when the data refreshes?
Yes. After the semantic model refreshes, the service updates the tiles that depend on it, although a short delay can occur. Tiles from DirectQuery sources follow their own update schedule. So the numbers stay current without manual work, as long as refresh itself runs reliably.
Should we put a report or a dashboard in an app?
An app can include both. In practice, most apps lead with reports, because readers want to filter and explore. A dashboard makes a good landing screen when executives want headline figures first. We decide with the audience in mind, and we test the navigation with a few real readers.
Can you redesign reports that people find confusing?
Yes. We review the pages with their readers, simplify the layout and fix the model beneath when necessary. A free 30-minute assessment comes first.
