Power BI for Mac: what works and what does not
Power BI on a Mac is a frequent search, because the main authoring application runs only on Windows. Mac users are not locked out, however. Reading reports works in any modern browser, and the service allows a growing amount of editing online. For full modeling, a Windows environment is still necessary. This guide lays out the options plainly, so a team can choose one that fits.
- Viewing works everywhere
- Authoring needs Windows
- Four practical routes

Is there a version of Power BI for Mac?
Microsoft has not released the desktop application for macOS. It installs on Windows only. So a Mac user cannot download it and run it directly.
The rest of the product is another story. The service runs in a browser, and browsers behave the same on every operating system. Mobile apps also exist for iPhone and iPad.
Therefore the question splits in two. If you only read reports, a Mac is fine. If you build models and reports, you need a way to reach Windows, or you work within the limits of browser editing.

Six ways to use Power BI on a Mac
Each route has a cost and a level of comfort, so compare them honestly.
The service in a browser
Open, filter and share reports online. You can also build reports on existing models there.
Web modeling
The service lets authors edit relationships and measures online, although the feature set is smaller than in Desktop.
A Windows virtual machine
Virtualization software runs Windows beside macOS. Check that your Mac's processor and the Windows edition are supported.
A cloud-hosted Windows desktop
A Windows desktop in the cloud streams to the Mac. Because nothing installs locally, the hardware hardly matters.
Remote access to a PC
An office Windows computer can serve as the build machine, and the Mac connects through remote desktop.
The mobile apps
Apps for iPhone and iPad suit reading on the move, but they are not authoring tools.
What can a Mac user do in Power BI online?
Quite a lot, as it turns out. A reader can open any shared report, use slicers, drill through and export. Subscriptions, comments and alerts also work. For most business users, nothing is missing.
Authors can go further than many expect. The service lets them create a report from a published semantic model and design pages online. Dataflows provide Power Query in the browser. Web modeling also covers a growing share of relationship and measure work.
However, gaps remain. Complex data shaping, some modeling features and performance tools still live in the Windows application. So a professional developer on a Mac usually wants one of the Windows routes as well. For live online lessons that work from any laptop, see Power BI training.
What to check before choosing a Power BI for Mac setup
A few questions point quickly to the right route.
- Whether the user reads reports, builds them or both
- How complex the models are and who maintains them
- Which processor the Mac has, since that affects virtual machines
- Whether company policy allows Windows licenses on personal devices
- How data sources will be reached from a cloud or remote desktop
- What the ongoing cost of each route is for your number of users
How to set up Power BI for Mac users in four steps
This order avoids buying tools that nobody needs.
Sort users by role
First separate readers from authors. Readers need only a browser and a license.
Try the browser first
Then let authors test online editing on a real report, since it may cover their work.
Pick one Windows route
If gaps appear, choose a virtual machine, a cloud desktop or a remote PC, and standardize on it.
Document the workflow
Finally, write down where files live and how publishing works, so the whole team follows one method.
Questions about Power BI on a Mac
Will Microsoft release Power BI Desktop for Mac?
Microsoft has not announced a native macOS version, and we do not speculate about its plans. The company has instead expanded what authors can do in the browser. So the realistic approach is to plan around the options that exist today and to watch Microsoft's release notes for changes.
Does a virtual machine on a Mac run the desktop app well?
Often, yes, but check compatibility first. Newer Macs use Apple silicon, which runs the Arm edition of Windows in a virtual machine. Desktop support on that combination has changed over time. Therefore confirm the current requirements in Microsoft's documentation and test before you buy software for a whole team.
Is a cloud-hosted desktop fast enough for report building?
Usually, provided the hosted machine has enough memory and sits in a region close to the user. Modeling large files needs a reasonably sized machine. Because the desktop lives in the cloud, it can also sit near the data sources. That often makes refresh during development faster than on a laptop.
Can a whole report team work on Macs?
Yes. A common pattern is that every reader uses a Mac and a few authors share cloud-hosted Windows desktops. The arrangement works well when files sit in a shared library and publishing follows one agreed process. The main risk is an improvised setup that only one person understands.
Can you build reports for us if we only have Macs?
Yes. We build in our own Windows environments and publish to your tenant, so your team only needs browsers. A free 30-minute assessment comes first. Power BI Agency is a division of Sataware Technologies, works remotely and is independent of Microsoft.
