Power BI performance analyzer: find out why a page is slow
Power BI performance analyzer is a built-in pane that measures how long each visual on a report page takes to load. It splits that time into parts, so an author can see whether the query, the rendering or the waiting is to blame. That turns a vague complaint about a slow report into a list of causes. Here is how to record, read and act on the results.
- Timing for every visual
- Query, render, other
- Copy the DAX query

What is Power BI performance analyzer?
It is a pane that logs what happens when a page loads or a reader interacts with it. Each visual gets a row with its duration in milliseconds. So the slowest visual is easy to spot.
In Desktop, Microsoft Learn places the pane on the Optimize ribbon. It is also available in the service when you edit a report, from the View menu. Therefore you can test a published report as well as a local file.
The tool measures and does not fix. Still, a measurement is where every honest speed project starts. Without it, teams tend to tune the wrong thing.

Reading the timing categories for each visual
Expand a visual in the pane and the total splits into these parts.
| Category | What it measures | What a high value suggests |
|---|---|---|
| DAX query | Time for the model to answer the query | A heavy measure or a weak model design |
| Direct query | Time the source database takes | A slow source or a missing index |
| Visual display | Time to draw the visual on screen | Too many data points or a complex visual |
| Other | Waiting on other visuals and background work | Too many visuals on the page |
| Total duration | The sum shown beside the visual's name | Start with the visual that tops the list |
How to run Power BI performance analyzer
A clean recording matters, so start from a page that has not loaded yet.
Open a blank page first
First, add an empty page and select it. Starting there means the page under test loads fresh once you switch to it.
Start recording
Then open the pane and select Start recording. After that, move to the page you want to measure.
Interact like a reader
Next, click the slicers and visuals people use most. Each action adds a new block of timings to the log.
Stop and export
Finally, select Stop. Sort by duration, and export the log to a file if you want to compare it after a change.
What should you do with a slow visual?
Look at the largest category first. If the DAX query dominates, copy the query from the pane. In Desktop you can then run it in DAX query view and test changes to the measure.
If Visual display dominates, the visual is drawing too much. For example, a table with thousands of rows or a map with many points takes time to render. So filter it, summarize it or choose a simpler visual.
A large Other value usually points at the page and not at one visual. Visuals wait their turn, so a crowded page makes each one look slow. Therefore removing a few visuals often helps more than tuning DAX.
Where does the tool stop being enough?
The pane shows timings on your machine with your account. A reader under row-level security, on a slower network, may see different results. So test as a typical reader where you can.
It also says little about the model's size or structure. For that, teams use other tools that list table sizes and column cardinality. While the pane tells you which visual hurts, those tools explain why the model is heavy.
Capacity is a third factor. On a busy capacity, the same query takes longer at peak times. Because of that, record at different times of day before you draw firm conclusions.
Power BI performance analyzer questions
Where is Power BI performance analyzer in Desktop?
Microsoft Learn currently places it on the Optimize ribbon, as a button named Performance analyzer. Selecting it opens a pane beside the report canvas, where you start recording. In the service, open a report in edit mode and look under the View menu instead.
What does the Other category mean?
Other covers the time a visual spends waiting and doing background work, such as waiting for other visuals to finish. A high figure does not mean that visual is faulty. Instead, it suggests the page has too much on it. So reduce the number of visuals, and then record again to compare.
Can I see the query behind a visual?
Yes. Expand the visual in the pane and select Copy query. You can paste it into a DAX tool to study it. In Desktop there is also an option to run it in DAX query view directly. As a result, you can change a measure and see the effect without rebuilding the visual.
Does Power BI performance analyzer work with DirectQuery?
Yes. With a DirectQuery source, a Direct query line appears for the visual and shows the time the source took. So you can tell whether the database or the model is the slow part. If that line is large, look at the source, for example its indexes, or consider an aggregation table.
Can you find out why our reports are slow?
Yes. Power BI Agency runs performance reviews that cover visuals, DAX, the model and refresh. We are a small team within Sataware Technologies, and independent of Microsoft. The review happens online in your own tenant, and you receive written findings. Start with a free 30-minute assessment, or call (480) 485-7373.
