Power BI for banking at commercial and retail banks
Power BI for banking is a way to turn core system, lending and ledger data into dashboards that managers at commercial and retail banks open every morning. Deposits, loans, branch results and credit quality sit in one model, so the numbers agree from the boardroom to the branch. Our consultants build it inside your own Microsoft tenant. Your security team stays in charge of access throughout.
- Deposits and loans together
- Branch scorecards
- Security team in control

How does Power BI for banking help a community bank?
A bank records every transaction, yet managers often wait for a monthly pack to see trends. The core system is good at processing, but it is rarely good at analysis. So analysts export balances, rebuild the same pivot tables and send files around by email.
A reporting model changes the rhythm. Balances, accounts, customers and branches load each night into linked tables. Then a branch manager sees deposit growth the next morning, while the lending head sees the pipeline and the loan book together. Treasury also reads liquidity and funding cost from the same tables. Because everyone reads from one source, the monthly pack becomes a check and not a discovery.
Control matters as much as speed. Examiners and auditors ask where a figure came from. When each measure has one written definition, that answer is quick. It also helps the team that prepares figures for regulatory reporting, while the filing process itself stays unchanged. Member-owned institutions ask different questions, so power bi for credit unions covers member growth and board packs instead.

Dashboards commercial and retail banks rely on
Start with the two or three that match your current priorities, then grow from there.
Deposit trends
Follow balances by product, branch and customer segment, so funding shifts show up early.
Commercial and retail loan book
See outstanding balances by type, rate band and maturity. Lenders then spot where the book is heavy.
Delinquency and credit quality
Past-due loans appear by age bucket and officer, because early contact improves the outcome.
Branch scorecards
Compare accounts opened, balances and activity across branches on the same terms.
Net interest margin
Track interest income against interest cost over time, and then break the result down by product.
Treasury and liquidity
Cash, securities and funding sources sit beside deposit trends, so treasury sees liquidity in one view.
What data sits behind banking dashboards in Power BI?
The core banking system is the main source. Loan origination, the general ledger and a CRM usually follow. Some banks already run a data warehouse, which makes the job easier. Others rely on nightly extract files from their core provider.
Both paths work. If a warehouse or SQL database exists, Power BI reads it through a gateway on your network. If only extract files exist, we load them into a staging database first. We never claim a direct connector to a core platform unless Microsoft documents one.
Sensitive fields need a plan before the build starts. Account numbers and personal details should not appear in wide-access reports. Therefore we agree with your security officer which columns load at all, and which roles may see them. Then our power bi row-level security service limits each role to the branches or portfolios it covers.
Signs your bank needs Power BI for banking analytics
When several of these apply, analysts spend more time preparing numbers than reading them.
- Branch reports arrive weeks after month end
- Analysts rebuild the same exports every month
- Lending and finance quote different balances
- Board packs depend on fragile spreadsheets
- Delinquency reviews happen too late
- Nobody can trace a figure to its source
How we deliver Power BI for banking securely
Security shapes every stage, so we involve your IT and risk teams from the first call.
Discovery call
We talk for thirty minutes, free of charge, about your systems and the reports that matter most.
Security and scope agreed
Before any build, the written quote sets out sources, fields and roles. Your security officer reviews it too.
Build inside your tenant
Our consultants use guest accounts that you issue and can revoke. So we work inside your tenant through accounts you control and do not copy data to our own systems.
Demo, test and hand over
Each week you see progress and test totals against the ledger. Finally your team receives full notes.
Power BI for bank reporting: questions and answers
Is Power BI secure enough for a bank's customer data?
Power BI runs on Microsoft's cloud and offers controls such as row-level security, sensitivity labels and audit logs. Whether that meets your policy is a decision for your own risk team. We help by building inside your tenant and by documenting every access rule. Microsoft also publishes its compliance details for you to review.
Can Power BI connect to our core system?
Usually, through a warehouse, database access or nightly files. The route differs by provider, since some give database access and others supply nightly extracts. We design around what your contract allows. If you already own a data warehouse, we start there instead, because it saves effort and keeps the core system untouched.
Will examiners accept reports built in Power BI?
Reports for internal management are your own choice of tool. For formal filings, you should keep using the process your regulator expects. Power BI often supports that process, since it shows the same ledger figures with a clear trail. We suggest you discuss any change to filing methods with your compliance lead first.
Do you sell licenses along with the project?
We do not. Licenses come from Microsoft or from your existing reseller, so our advice stays neutral. During the assessment we explain how license types affect sharing and capacity in general terms. Then we refer you to Microsoft's documentation for current details, since those terms change from time to time.
