Power BI for law firms that want clearer partner reports
Power BI for law firms is a reporting layer over the practice management and billing system. It shows hours, billing, collections and matter profit by partner, practice group and client. Managing partners then see the firm's position without a stack of printed reports. Our consultants build it inside your own Microsoft tenant, because client confidentiality leaves no room for copies elsewhere.
- Realization and collections
- Matter-level profit
- Confidential by design

What does Power BI for law firms reveal?
A law firm earns money through a long chain. A lawyer works an hour, records it, bills it and then waits for payment. Value can leak at each link. Time goes unrecorded, bills get cut, and invoices age.
Most billing systems report on each link separately. So partners see hours in one report and collections in another, and the connection between them stays vague. That makes it hard to tell a busy practice from a profitable one.
A joined view follows the whole chain. It shows worked value, billed value and collected cash for the same matter. Then the firm sees where realization drops, and whether the cause is pricing, write-downs or slow payers. Because the view updates daily, billing partners can also act before month end.

Partner and practice dashboards worth building
Each page answers a question the management committee already asks, so adoption comes easily.
Billable hours
Compare recorded hours with targets by lawyer and practice group. Late time entry also shows up here.
Realization
Trace standard value to billed and collected value, so write-downs and discounts are visible.
Unbilled work and receivables
Work in progress and open invoices appear by age and partner, because old balances rarely improve.
Matter profitability
Fees sit beside the cost of the people who did the work. Then fixed-fee matters show their real result.
Client overview
See fees, matters and payment habits per client, and also spot heavy reliance on a few names.
Origination and pipeline
Track new matters by source and partner, since tomorrow's workload starts with today's intake.
How does a legal billing system connect to Power BI?
The practice management or billing system supplies nearly everything: timekeepers, matters, time entries, invoices and receipts. HR or payroll adds cost rates. Some firms also bring in a CRM or an intake tool for pipeline views.
Many legal systems run on a SQL database, which Power BI reads through a gateway on your network. Cloud-hosted systems often offer an API or a reporting export instead. We confirm the path for your product before quoting. If the vendor restricts access, we design around its approved method.
Confidentiality shapes the model. Ethical walls and restricted matters must hold in reports too. Therefore we mirror those limits with row-level security, and we test them with your risk team before anyone else logs in. Ethical walls, for example, map well to power bi row-level security, which hides restricted matters from each blocked user.
When Power BI for law firms makes sense
Firms tend to reach this point as they add offices or practice groups.
- Partners receive reports on paper or PDF
- Realization is a once-a-year calculation
- Aged receivables surprise the committee
- Fixed-fee matters have unknown margins
- Finance staff rebuild reports every month
- Practice groups cannot compare results
How we implement Power BI for law firms
Discretion comes first, so access and confidentiality get settled before any data moves.
Confidential first call
We hold a free thirty minute call about your system and reports. The call needs no client data.
Scope and access plan
The written quote covers pages, sources and who may see what. Your risk partner can then approve it.
Build inside the firm's tenant
We work through accounts you issue and do not copy matter data to our own systems.
Weekly review, then handover
Finance checks figures against the billing system each week. Afterwards we hand over files and notes.
Law firm reporting in Power BI: questions partners ask
Is Power BI for law firms safe for confidential matter data?
The design keeps data inside your own Microsoft tenant, under your administrators' control. Row-level security then limits each person to the matters and clients they may see. We also leave out narrative text from time entries unless you need it. Still, your firm's own security and ethics review should approve the setup before launch.
Can Power BI for a practice respect ethical walls?
Yes, if the billing system records them in a form the model can read. We load the list of restricted matters and permitted people, and security rules apply it to every page. Then we test with real accounts. Where a wall exists only informally, we ask you to define it first.
Will partners actually use law firm Power BI dashboards?
They do when the first page answers their own question. So we design a personal view that opens on a partner's matters, unbilled time and receivables. It works on a phone as well. We also keep the page count low, because a short report that people open beats a long one they ignore.
Does this replace our billing system's reports?
Not entirely. Operational documents such as pre-bills and invoices should stay in the billing system. Power BI takes over the analysis on top: trends, comparisons and drill-down. Many firms then retire a large set of monthly printed reports, which frees finance staff for more useful work.
Who is behind Power BI Agency?
We are a division of Sataware Technologies, a small team of experienced consultants, and we are independent of Microsoft. All work is remote. We do not resell licenses. Instead we fix the scope in a written quote and show progress every week.
