Power BI for oil and gas operators, from wellhead to ledger
Power BI for oil and gas gives operators one view of production, downtime, operating cost and safety across wells, leases and facilities. Field systems and the accounting ledger rarely agree on names or dates, so engineers and finance argue over the same barrel. Our consultants build a shared model online, inside your own Microsoft tenant, and show progress at a demo every week.
- Volumes by well
- Cost per barrel
- Downtime by cause

What problems does Power BI for oil and gas solve?
An operator collects data at every step. Pumpers enter daily readings. Sensors log pressures and rates. Accountants book revenue and lease expenses weeks later. However, each group keeps its numbers in a different tool.
That split creates slow answers. For example, an engineer asks why a lease lost volume last month. The production system shows the drop, while the cause sits in a downtime log and the cost sits in the ledger. So someone builds a spreadsheet, and the next question starts the work again.
A shared model ends the loop. It ties every reading, cost and event to one well master and one calendar. Then a single page answers volume, cause and cost together, and the conversation moves on to what to do.

Power BI for upstream and midstream operations
These six pages cover most first requests, and each one can ship on its own.
Daily production
Oil, gas and water volumes appear by well, lease and area, with the trend against forecast beside them.
Downtime and deferment
Hours lost and volumes deferred sit by cause code, so the team fixes the largest causes first.
Lease operating expense
Cost lines roll up per well and per barrel. As a result, high-cost wells stand out before the quarterly review.
Capital against approval
Drilling and completion spend tracks against each approved budget, since overruns are cheaper to catch early.
Safety and environment
Incidents, near misses and inspections show by site and type. Managers then see trends instead of single events.
Throughput and nominations
Gathering and plant volumes compare with nominated volumes, so midstream teams spot imbalances sooner.
Where does field and finance data for a Power BI model come from?
Most operators hold four kinds of source. A production accounting system keeps allocated volumes. A field data capture tool keeps daily readings and downtime notes. An accounting or ERP system keeps revenue and expenses. Finally, a historian keeps high-frequency sensor data.
Many of these sit on SQL databases inside the company network, so Power BI reaches them through an on-premises data gateway. Other products offer an API or scheduled exports. We confirm the route for each system before the quote, because the route decides how fresh the reports can be.
Sensor data needs care. A historian can hold readings every few seconds, which is far more than a management report needs. Therefore we summarize it to hourly or daily values first. After that, the model stays small and the pages stay quick. Years of daily well readings often belong in a warehouse, which power bi data warehouse consulting plans.
Signs an operator needs Power BI for oil and gas reporting
Several of these together usually mean the reporting process has outgrown spreadsheets.
- Morning reports arrive by mid afternoon
- Wells carry different names in each system
- Cost per barrel takes a week to work out
- Downtime causes live in free text notes
- Partners ask for figures nobody can find
- One analyst holds the whole process together
How a Power BI for oil and gas build moves forward
Each stage ends with something you can open, so progress is never a matter of trust.
Assessment call
First we hear which questions take too long today. The thirty minute call is free and ends with a plain opinion.
Scope on paper
Next comes a written quote. It lists the assets, systems and pages, and also what stays out.
Well master first
Then we agree one list of wells, leases and facilities, because every later figure depends on it.
Weekly demos to handover
Working pages appear each week for feedback. Finally your team receives the files, the notes and a walkthrough.
Power BI for wells and facilities: common questions
Can Power BI map wells and facilities?
Yes. Power BI includes map visuals that plot points by latitude and longitude. So each well can carry a color for status or a size for volume. Filters on the page also apply to the map, which helps an area manager focus. The well master must hold clean coordinates first, and we check that early.
Is Power BI a replacement for production accounting software?
No, and we would not suggest it. Your production accounting system stays the system of record for allocations and regulatory filings. Power BI reads from it and presents the results beside cost and downtime. In short, it is a reporting layer. Because of that, the model never changes a booked volume.
How do field data systems connect to Power BI?
The route depends on each product. Databases inside your network connect through the on-premises data gateway, which Microsoft documents in detail. Cloud products often provide an API, while older tools may only export files. We list the route for every source in the quote. Then nobody discovers a gap halfway through the build.
Can Power BI for partners and field staff show only their own assets?
Yes. Row-level security filters the data by the person who signs in. For example, a site supervisor sees one area and an executive sees all of them. The rules live in the model, so every report built on it follows them. We test each role with you before anything goes live.
Who is behind Power BI Agency?
Power BI Agency is a division of Sataware Technologies. It is a small team of experienced consultants, and it is independent of Microsoft. We deliver the service online to companies. Work happens in your tenant, and we do not copy data to our own systems. Also, we do not resell licenses, which keeps our advice neutral.
