Power BI SAP HANA integration without the guesswork
Power BI SAP HANA integration connects reports to the in-memory database that runs many SAP systems. Microsoft documents an SAP HANA database connector that supports both Import and DirectQuery. However, it depends on an SAP driver, and the choice of mode shapes everything after it. So the first job is a plan that your SAP Basis team and your analysts both accept.

How does Power BI SAP HANA integration connect?
The author chooses the SAP HANA database connector in Power BI Desktop. Then they enter the server name and the port. After that, Power BI asks for a sign-in and lists the objects that account may read.
One prerequisite comes first. Microsoft's article says the SAP HANA ODBC driver must sit on the machine that runs the query. The driver comes from SAP, so someone with an SAP account has to download it.
Sign-in has options too. The connector article lists basic, database and Windows authentication. So we agree with your security team which one fits, and we ask for a read-only account kept for reporting alone.

Import or DirectQuery for HANA data?
The connector supports both modes, and each one suits a different kind of report.
Import
Power BI copies the data into the semantic model. Reports then respond quickly, but figures are only as fresh as the last refresh.
DirectQuery
Each visual sends a query to HANA when someone opens it. So the data is current, while speed depends on the source.
A mix of both
Large fact tables can stay in HANA while small lookup tables load into the model. However, this needs careful design.
What should we read from HANA: views or tables?
SAP teams usually publish calculation views for reporting. Those views carry the business logic, such as currency handling and the right joins. So we read views where they exist, instead of raw tables.
DirectQuery adds one more choice. Microsoft describes two ways to treat HANA in that mode, as a multidimensional source or as a relational source. The first behaves like a cube, while the second gives the modeler more freedom. We pick per report, because the two behave differently with measures.
Variables and input parameters also matter. Many views expect a value, for example a fiscal year or a company code. Therefore we test how each view responds before we promise a design. The Power BI SAP integration overview and the Power BI SAP BW integration page cover the other SAP sources. Views like these often feed a Power BI general ledger report.
Pitfalls in a Power BI SAP HANA integration
When a HANA-based report disappoints, the cause is usually on this list.
- The ODBC driver is missing on the gateway machine
- DirectQuery visuals fire too many queries at once
- Raw tables loaded without SAP business logic
- Input parameters left at defaults nobody chose
- One shared login with wide access
- No agreement with Basis on query load
Our steps for Power BI SAP HANA integration
Four stages keep SAP specialists and report users in the same conversation.
Meet the Basis team
First we learn which views exist, how access works and what load the system can bear.
Choose the mode
Then we decide between Import and DirectQuery for each model and record the reason.
Set up driver and gateway
Next we install the SAP driver and configure the on-premises data gateway with your administrators.
Model and verify
Finally we build the semantic model and check totals against SAP, because trust starts with matching figures.
SAP HANA data in Power BI: common questions
Does Power BI have a native SAP HANA connector?
Yes. Microsoft's Power Query connector list includes an SAP HANA database connector, and its article marks it as generally available. It supports Import and DirectQuery for Power BI semantic models. The article also lists the SAP HANA ODBC driver as a prerequisite, so that driver must be in place first.
Does a Power BI SAP HANA setup need a gateway?
For the online experience, Microsoft's article says you must use an on-premises data gateway with this connector, whether the data is local or online. So we plan a gateway machine with the SAP driver on it. We size it with your administrators and keep it close to the database on the network.
Will Power BI slow down our SAP HANA system?
It can, if nobody plans the load. DirectQuery sends queries whenever people use a report, and Import sends large queries at refresh time. So we agree limits with your Basis team, schedule refresh for quiet hours and keep visuals per page low. Then reporting and transactions can share the system.
Can Power BI combine SAP HANA data with other sources?
Yes. An Import model can hold HANA data beside files, cloud apps or other databases. With DirectQuery, combining sources is possible through composite models, but it needs more care. In both cases the keys must match. We map material, customer and company codes early for that reason.
