Cognos to Power BI migration that keeps the numbers people trust
Cognos to Power BI migration moves reporting from IBM Cognos Analytics into Power BI semantic models, interactive reports and paginated reports. Nothing converts a Cognos report into a Power BI file, so each one needs a fresh build on a new model. Power BI Agency plans that work in waves, builds inside your own tenant and proves every figure against the Cognos original.
- Report by report, in waves
- Figures proven against Cognos
- Unused reports retired

What makes a Cognos to Power BI migration different?
IBM Cognos has served large companies for a long time, and it does formal reporting well. Many estates hold hundreds of reports built over years. So the first surprise in most projects is simply how much exists.
The second is structural. Cognos reports usually read from packages or data modules that describe the business layer. Power BI uses a semantic model with relationships and DAX measures. The ideas are related, but the pieces do not line up exactly.
Therefore we begin with the model, not the reports. Once the business layer is sound in Power BI, many Cognos reports collapse into a few flexible pages. For example, a dozen regional variants can become one Power BI sales territory analysis page with a region filter.

How Cognos features translate into Power BI
Each Cognos feature has a counterpart, although the fit is never perfect.
Packages and data modules
A semantic model takes this role. We rebuild it as a star schema, since Power BI performs best that way.
List and crosstab reports
Tables and matrix visuals cover most of these. Then slicers replace many separate report variants.
Pixel-exact documents
Paginated reports suit invoices, statements and other layouts that must print the same every time.
Prompts
Slicers and report parameters fill this need, but the user experience differs, so we show it early.
Bursting
Row-level security plus subscriptions handles many cases. Still, we test each burst rule on its own.
Scheduled output
Subscriptions send reports on a schedule. As a result, readers keep a familiar email habit.
Should every Cognos report move to Power BI?
Almost never. Usage logs tend to show that a small share of reports gets most of the views. Many others exist because someone asked once, long ago.
So an inventory pays for itself. We sort reports into three groups: rebuild, merge and retire. Because several Cognos reports often differ only by a filter, one Power BI page with slicers can replace the set.
A few reports may also stay in Cognos for a while. For example, a regulatory output with a fixed format may not justify early effort. We say so plainly and plan it for a later wave. If the platform choice itself is still open, our Power BI vs Cognos comparison covers that decision first.
Risks a Cognos to Power BI migration has to manage
Knowing these six risks up front keeps the project calm.
- Business rules hidden inside report queries
- Reports that nobody admits to owning
- Burst rules with many recipient lists
- Totals that differ due to old filters
- Readers who expect the exact old layout
- Sources that only Cognos reaches today
How we run a Cognos to Power BI migration
Every wave passes through the same four stages.
Cognos report inventory
First we list the reports, their usage and their owners, and then we agree which ones matter.
Model before pages
We build the semantic model in your tenant, since good reports depend on it.
Power BI rebuild and demo
Pages and paginated reports take shape next, and a weekly demo puts them beside the Cognos output.
Sign-off and switch
Finally, owners confirm the totals, readers get a short walkthrough and the old report retires.
Questions on leaving Cognos for Power BI
Is there a converter for Cognos reports to Power BI?
Microsoft does not provide one, and we do not promise automatic conversion. A person has to read each report specification and rebuild its logic. However, patterns repeat, so later waves move faster than the first. We also reuse the semantic model across many reports, which removes a lot of duplicate work.
Can Power BI match Cognos bursting?
Often it can, though by a different route. Row-level security shows each reader only their own rows, and subscriptions deliver on a schedule. Some paginated features depend on license or capacity, so we check Microsoft's current documentation. Then we test every burst rule before anyone relies on it.
How do you prove the new Power BI numbers match Cognos?
We run both side by side. For each report in scope, the owner picks a few periods, and we compare totals line by line. When figures differ, we trace the cause. Sometimes the old report held a filter nobody remembered, and then the owner decides which rule is right.
What skills does our team need after the move?
Your analysts need working knowledge of Power BI Desktop, data modeling and some DAX. We explain our choices at the weekly demos, so learning happens along the way. The handover also includes notes on the model. Because everything sits in your tenant, your team can explore it from the start.
Who carries out the migration work?
Power BI Agency does. We are a small team, a division of Sataware Technologies and independent of Microsoft and IBM. We do not resell licenses. The service runs online. Call (480) 485-7373 for the free thirty minute assessment, and we respond within 2 hours.
