Power BI data warehouse consulting for reports that scale
Power BI data warehouse consulting designs the database layer that sits beneath your reports, so data arrives clean, shaped and ready to model. It covers the choice of platform, the star-schema design, the loading process and how Power BI connects. Power BI Agency plans and builds that layer inside your own Microsoft tenant, fixes the scope in a written quote and demos progress weekly.
- Star schema from the start
- Logic held in one place
- Sized to your real needs

Why would Power BI need a data warehouse at all?
Power BI can load data straight from source systems, and for small setups that works well. However, each report then carries its own cleanup rules. As reports multiply, so do the copies of that logic.
A warehouse moves the cleanup upstream. Data from every system lands in one database, already joined and named in business terms. Then each Power BI model reads tidy tables instead of raw ones.
History is another reason. Source systems often keep only the current state. A warehouse can store snapshots, so a report can show how things stood last quarter. Therefore trend questions become possible. For example, a Power BI employee turnover analysis needs past headcount snapshots that a source system rarely keeps.

What Power BI data warehouse consulting delivers
A warehouse project hands over these six things.
Platform advice
We compare options such as a Fabric warehouse, a lakehouse or a SQL database against your skills and volumes.
Dimensional design
Fact and dimension tables follow a star schema, because Microsoft's guidance favors that shape for Power BI.
Load process
Pipelines bring data in on a schedule. Then checks confirm that every run completed.
Conformed keys
Customers, products and dates share one key across subject areas, so figures line up.
History handling
We agree which changes to track over time, since not every attribute needs a history.
Semantic model link
A Power BI model sits on top. As a result, report authors start from clean tables.
When is a warehouse too much for a Power BI project?
Not every company needs one. If you have two or three sources and light volumes, Power Query and a good model may be enough. Adding a database layer would then bring cost without benefit.
The balance shifts with scale. For example, many sources, long history or several teams sharing data all point toward a warehouse. Slow refresh and bloated models are also signs.
So we begin with questions, not a design. How many systems feed the reports? Who else needs the data? Because the answers differ for every company, the recommendation differs too.
Storage options we weigh in Power BI data warehouse consulting
Each option fits a different situation, and the table summarizes the usual trade-offs.
| Option | Fits when | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Power Query and model only | Few sources, small data | Logic repeats as reports grow |
| Dataflows | Several models share cleaned tables | Less suited to heavy history |
| SQL database | The team knows SQL and volumes are moderate | You manage sizing and tuning |
| Fabric warehouse | You want SQL on a Fabric capacity | Capacity needs monitoring |
| Fabric lakehouse | Files and tables mix, engineers use Spark | New skills for some teams |
How our Power BI data warehouse consulting works
We build one subject area first, and then extend.
Assessment and sources
A free thirty minute call reviews your systems. After that we list the sources for the first subject area.
Design on paper
We draw the star schema and agree every definition with the business owner before building.
Build and load
Tables and pipelines go into your tenant, and each weekly demo shows real data arriving.
Connect and verify
Finally, a Power BI model connects, and we reconcile totals against the source systems.
Questions on data warehouses for Power BI
Which data warehouse works best with Power BI?
There is no single best choice. Power BI connects to many databases and cloud warehouses, and Microsoft documents each connector. The right platform depends on your skills, your existing cloud and your volumes. We compare a short list against those facts and explain the reasoning, so the decision is yours.
Do we need Microsoft Fabric to build a warehouse for Power BI?
No. Fabric offers a warehouse and a lakehouse that integrate closely with Power BI. However, a standard SQL database or another cloud warehouse can serve the same role. We look at what you already own first. Then we weigh Fabric against it without a sales interest, since we do not resell capacity.
Should Power BI import warehouse data or query it directly?
Both modes have a place. Import copies data into memory and usually gives the fastest reports. DirectQuery leaves data in the warehouse and queries it live. Fabric also offers Direct Lake for lake tables. We test the options on your volumes and then recommend one per model.
Can a warehouse project start small?
Yes, and it should. We start with one subject area, such as sales, and prove it end to end. Then the next area reuses the shared dimensions. Because each stage has its own written scope, you can pause after any one of them.
Who designs and builds the warehouse?
Consultants at Power BI Agency do. We are a small team, a division of Sataware Technologies and independent of Microsoft. The service runs online, and the warehouse is built in your own environment, not ours. Call (480) 485-7373 or send the form. We reply within 2 hours.
