Power BI DAX consulting for measures that give one answer
Power BI DAX consulting helps a team write, fix and speed up the formulas behind its reports. DAX is the formula language of the semantic model, and small mistakes in it lead to totals that look right but are not. One of our consultants reviews your measures, corrects the logic, and shows your analysts why each formula behaves the way it does.
- Wrong totals traced
- Slow measures rewritten

What does Power BI DAX consulting solve?
DAX looks like Excel at first glance. The functions have similar names, so new authors feel at home. But the language works on tables and filters, not on cells, and that difference catches almost everyone.
As a result, a measure can return the correct value in one visual and a wrong one in another. The total row may not equal the sum of the lines above it. Year to date figures may reset at the wrong month.
A consultant finds the cause instead of patching the symptom. Often the formula is fine, but the model beneath it has a weak relationship or a missing date table. So we look at both before we change a single line.

Common Power BI DAX formula problems
These six patterns account for most of the requests that reach us.
Totals that do not add up
A row-by-row calculation needs an iterator. We rewrite the measure so the total and the detail lines finally agree.
Time intelligence errors
Prior year, rolling periods and fiscal calendars need a proper date table. We add one and then rebuild the measures on it.
Slow visuals
Some formulas force the engine to scan far more rows than needed. We measure query time first, then simplify the filter logic.
Filter context confusion
Slicers change a result in ways the author did not expect. We show exactly which filters apply at each step and why.
Copied measure sprawl
Dozens of near-identical measures are hard to maintain. Calculation groups or a cleaner base measure can replace them.
Columns used as measures
Calculated columns often grow the model for no gain. We move that logic into measures or back into Power Query instead.
Why is DAX in Power BI harder than it first appears?
Two ideas sit at the heart of the language: row context and filter context. Row context means the formula works through a table one row at a time. Filter context means the visual, the slicers and the measure itself all narrow the data before the calculation runs.
The CALCULATE function changes that filter context, and therefore it appears in most useful measures. Still, its rules are subtle. A filter argument can replace an existing filter, add to it or remove it, depending on how you write it.
Because of this, guessing rarely works. We teach a simple habit instead. Write the measure in small steps with variables, test each step in a table visual, and only then combine them. The same habit helps with tricky logic, such as a Power BI customer churn analysis, where one wrong filter flips the result.
When Power BI DAX consulting saves time
A short engagement makes sense when your team meets problems like these.
- A total differs from the finance system
- One visual takes many seconds to load
- Nobody dares to edit an old measure
- Fiscal year figures reset at the wrong point
- The same formula exists in many reports
- A new analyst needs to learn quickly
How our Power BI DAX consulting works
Each request follows the same four steps, whether it covers one measure or a whole model.
Reproduce the issue
First we see the wrong number or the slow page on your own data, so we fix the real problem and not a guess.
Check the model
Then we review relationships, the date table and column types, because many formula problems start there.
Rewrite and measure
We rewrite the formula with variables and compare query times before and after in Performance analyzer.
Explain the change
Finally, we walk your analysts through the new measure line by line, so the next one is easier to write alone.
Questions about hiring outside DAX help
Can you fix a single Power BI DAX measure?
Yes. Some requests cover one stubborn measure, and that is fine. We start with the free 30-minute assessment, look at the formula on a shared screen, and tell you whether it needs a quick fix or a model change. After that a written quote states the scope, so a small job stays small.
Do you need access to our Power BI data for DAX work?
We work inside your own Microsoft tenant, usually through a guest account you control, and we do not copy data to our own systems. When access is sensitive, we can also work on a screen share while your analyst drives. In both cases we see enough to test the formula against real totals, which matters more than sample files.
Will our analysts understand the new formulas?
That is the aim. A clever formula that nobody can read becomes a problem later. So we write in small, named steps and add short comments. We also explain the reasoning during the weekly demo. As a result, your team can adjust the measure when the business rule changes.
Is Power BI DAX tuning only about speed?
No. Speed is one reason, but correct results come first. A fast measure that returns a wrong total is worse than a slow one. Therefore each review checks the result against a trusted figure before we tune anything. Readable, correct and then fast is the order we follow.
Who are the consultants?
Our consultants handle every request. Power BI Agency is a small team, a division of Sataware Technologies, and independent of Microsoft. We work with clients remotely. You speak with the person who does the work, and we reply to a new request within 2 hours.
