Power BI vs Looker: two ways to model and share data

Power BI vs Looker compares Microsoft's reporting platform with the business intelligence product from Google Cloud, and both are mature, capable tools. Looker centers on LookML, a modeling language that developers keep in code. Power BI centers on a semantic model that authors build in a desktop app. So the right choice depends mostly on your cloud, your skills and how your team likes to work.

Power BI vs Looker: what is the short answer?

Both products turn raw data into shared, governed reports. However, they start from different places. Looker sits on top of a SQL database and sends queries to it live. Power BI usually imports data into its own engine, although it can also query a source directly.

That difference shapes the daily work. A Looker developer writes LookML to describe tables, joins and measures, then keeps those files under version control. A Power BI author shapes data in Power Query and writes measures in DAX. Both routes lead to one agreed set of numbers.

So neither tool wins on every count. A company that runs on Google Cloud and has strong SQL skills often leans toward Looker. A company that lives in Microsoft 365 and Excel often leans the other way. Still, the details below matter more than any one-line verdict.

Where does Looker fit better than Power BI?

Looker suits teams that think in SQL and code. Because the model lives in text files, developers review changes the same way they review software. As a result, a large team can work on one model without stepping on each other.

It also suits a modern cloud warehouse. Looker leaves the data where it is and lets the database do the heavy lifting. So a company that has already invested in a fast warehouse gets more from that spend.

Finally, Looker has a long record with embedded analytics and data applications. A product team can place charts inside its own software through the Looker APIs. If that is the main goal, Looker deserves a serious look.

Where does Power BI fit better than Looker?

Power BI suits organizations that already use Microsoft 365. People sign in with the same account, open reports in Teams and analyze a model from Excel. Therefore new users meet fewer hurdles.

It also suits business analysts who are not developers. Power BI Desktop lets an analyst connect, shape and chart data without writing code first. Then, when needs grow, DAX adds depth. Looker asks for LookML skills earlier in the process.

The wider platform counts too. Microsoft Fabric places lakehouses, warehouses and pipelines beside the reports. So a team that plans its data estate on Microsoft keeps everything in one place. Licensing differs between the two vendors as well, and each publishes its own current terms. If Google's free tool is the real alternative, read Power BI vs Looker Studio, and when a move is decided, see Looker to Power BI migration or Looker Studio to Power BI migration.

Power BI vs Looker: how to choose in four steps

Work through these steps with your own data before you sign anything.

  1. Start with your cloud

First note where your data lives today. A tool that sits close to your warehouse and identity system causes less friction.

  2. Check the skills

Then list who will build and maintain the content. SQL-heavy teams and Excel-heavy teams tend to prefer different tools.

  3. Test one real report

Next build the same report in both products. After that, ask the people who will read it which one they would open.

  4. Compare the full cost

Finally, ask each vendor for terms that match your user counts, since public list figures rarely match a real case.

Power BI vs Looker: common buyer questions

Is Looker the same as Looker Studio?

No. Looker is the enterprise platform with LookML and a governed model at its core. Looker Studio is a separate, lighter product for quick dashboards, and it grew out of Google Data Studio. The names are close, so buyers often mix them up. When a company weighs a governed BI platform against Microsoft's, it usually means Looker itself.

Can Microsoft's tool read BigQuery data the way Looker does?

Yes. Microsoft lists a Google BigQuery connector for Power BI, so a model can import tables or query them directly. However, the experience differs from Looker, which Google shaped around in-database queries from the start. So test refresh times and query costs with your own data before you decide. Microsoft's connector documentation lists the current options.

Is a move away from Looker hard?

It takes planning, because no tool converts LookML into a semantic model. Each view and measure needs a rebuild in Power Query and DAX. Still, the business logic already exists in readable files, which helps a great deal. A sensible first step is to review which dashboards people still open. Then the rebuild covers only content that earns its place.

Which tool is easier for business users?

That depends on the user. Many analysts find Power BI familiar because it feels close to Excel. Others like the way a Looker Explore lets them pick fields from a governed model in the browser. Both serve readers well once a good model exists. So a short trial with real staff tells you more than any feature list.

Can Power BI Agency give neutral advice on both tools?

We build only in Power BI, and we say that openly. However, we do not resell licenses and we are independent of Microsoft, so a sale does not shape our advice. If Looker suits your setup better, we will tell you on the free 30-minute assessment. Power BI Agency is a division of Sataware Technologies and works online.
