Looker Studio migration

Looker Studio to Power BI migration for growing report estates

Looker Studio to Power BI migration rebuilds your Google-based reports as Power BI reports on a shared semantic model in your Microsoft tenant. Teams usually start it when marketing dashboards have multiplied and numbers no longer agree. One of our consultants reconnects each data source, replaces blends with proper relationships and then checks every chart against the original before people switch.

  • Google sources reconnected
  • Blends become one model
  • Charts checked one by one

What is a Looker Studio to Power BI migration?

Google's report builder is quick to pick up. Someone adds a data source, drags a chart and shares a link. So reports spread fast, often without a shared model behind them. Each report then carries its own calculated fields and its own blends.

Power BI takes a different route. It places a semantic model between the data and the pages. That model holds tables, relationships and measures, and many reports can use it. Therefore the move is less about charts and more about building that middle layer once.

After the model exists, the pages follow quickly. We rebuild the charts people use, add slicers for the old filter controls and publish the result as an app. Meanwhile the original reports stay live for comparison. For example, one Power BI website analytics dashboard can replace several Looker Studio reports built on the same Google Analytics data.

What moves when you leave Looker Studio for Power BI

Six pieces make up most report estates, and each one has a Power BI answer.

Google Analytics data

Microsoft documents a Google Analytics connector for Power BI. We confirm which properties and fields it reaches for you.

Google Sheets

Sheets also have a documented connector. However, we move key tables to a sturdier store when many reports depend on them.

BigQuery tables

Power BI connects to Google BigQuery as well. So a warehouse you already run can stay where it is.

Calculated fields

Field formulas become DAX measures in the model. As a result, one definition serves every page.

Blended data

Blends turn into relationships between tables. Since the model handles the joins, charts stop disagreeing.

Each useful page gets a rebuilt version. We also add drill-through where users opened several reports before.

Why would a team move from Looker Studio to Power BI?

The first tool is a fine fit for light reporting on Google data. Many teams keep it for that purpose, and that is reasonable. However, needs change as a company grows. Finance, sales and operations data arrive, and most of it sits outside Google.

Power BI suits that wider mix. It connects to a long list of sources and lets you model them together. It also adds row-level security, scheduled refresh through a gateway and governed workspaces. For example, a regional manager can see only the rows for one region.

Still, a move costs time, so we look at the case honestly. If a handful of marketing pages is all you need, we will say that staying put is sensible. Otherwise we propose a phased plan that starts with the reports that hurt most. Still deciding? Our Power BI vs Looker Studio guide compares the free tool, while Power BI vs Looker covers the enterprise product.

Pitfalls in a Looker Studio to Power BI migration

These six traps catch many teams, so our plan addresses each one in writing.

  • Rebuilding every report without ranking use
  • Copying blends instead of modeling tables
  • Leaving business logic in chart settings
  • Ignoring refresh limits on each source
  • Forgetting viewers who need a license
  • Dropping the old reports too soon

How our Looker Studio to Power BI migration runs

Four stages take you from a first call to a finished handover, with a demo every week.

  1. Free assessment

First we look at two or three reports with you in a thirty minute call. You then hear an honest view of the effort.

  2. Source and report list

Next we list every data source and page. The written quote states what moves, what merges and what retires.

  3. Shared model build

We build the semantic model before any page, because every chart depends on it for the same numbers.

  4. Looker Studio reports to Power BI

Finally the pages go live beside the originals. After the figures match, your team switches the links.

From Looker Studio to Power BI: answers for marketers

Does Power BI connect to the same Google sources as Looker Studio?

It connects to several of them. Microsoft's connector list includes Google Analytics, Google Sheets and Google BigQuery. For other Google products, we check the list and the vendor documentation first. When no documented connector exists, an export into BigQuery or a staging database gives Power BI a reliable path instead.

Will viewers need a license once reports move to Power BI?

Usually they will, and that is a real difference. Sharing in Power BI depends on per-user licenses or on a capacity that covers viewers. Because the rules change over time, we describe the options in general terms. Then we point you to Microsoft's current licensing page before you decide.

Can Looker Studio and Power BI run side by side?

Yes, and we recommend it during the project. Both tools read from the same sources, so the old reports remain available while the new ones prove themselves. After each area passes its checks, you retire the matching originals. That way nobody loses a report they rely on.

How do you handle calculated fields and blends?

We move the logic into one semantic model. Calculated fields become DAX measures, and blends become relationships between tables. Since every report then reads the same definitions, totals stop drifting apart. We also write a short note for each measure, so your analysts can maintain it later.

Who does the rebuild?

Consultants from Power BI Agency do. We are a small team and a division of Sataware Technologies, independent of Microsoft and Google. The work happens online, inside your own tenant. We also reply to every message within 2 hours.
