Web analytics in Power BI

Power BI Google Analytics integration beside your sales data

Power BI Google Analytics integration puts website traffic next to the revenue and lead figures a company already reports on. Power BI has a native Google Analytics connector that reads GA4 properties. So a marketing team can stop copying numbers between tools. However, the connector returns summarized data with limits, and larger sites often get better results through the BigQuery export instead.

  • BigQuery route for scale
  • Traffic beside revenue

How does Power BI Google Analytics integration work?

In Power BI Desktop you choose the Google Analytics connector and sign in with a Google account. Then you browse accounts and properties and tick the dimensions and metrics you want. Power Query builds a table from that choice.

The connector loads data by import. Therefore a report shows web figures as of the last refresh. Since Google Analytics is a cloud service, the Power BI service refreshes it without a gateway.

What comes back is a summary, not raw events. Google's reporting API decides which dimensions and metrics can combine. It also applies quotas, and it may sample or group rows on busy properties. So totals can differ slightly from the Google screens.

Web measures worth bringing into a model

These six areas answer most marketing questions once they sit beside CRM data.

Sessions by channel

Traffic splits by source and medium, so spend on each channel meets the visits it produced.

Landing pages

Entry pages show which content draws people in, while engagement hints at whether they stay.

Key events

Form sends, sign-ups and purchases count as outcomes, which then link to leads in the CRM.

Campaign tags

Tagged links tie visits to a named campaign, because the campaign field travels with each session.

Device and region

Splits by device and country reveal where a page works and where it loses people.

Trend over time

A shared date table lets web trends line up with orders and revenue week by week.

When is the BigQuery export the better route?

GA4 can export raw events to Google BigQuery. Power BI also has a native BigQuery connector. So the two together form a second path that avoids the reporting API.

This route gives event-level rows. As a result, you define sessions, funnels and attribution yourself, and nothing is sampled. It also keeps history for as long as you store it, while the standard interface limits how far back detailed data goes.

The cost is effort. Raw events need SQL to become useful tables, and BigQuery bills for queries and storage. For a small site the simple connector is enough. For a busy store or a multi-brand group, the export usually repays the setup. The finished model often feeds a Power BI website analytics dashboard.

Limits of a Power BI Google Analytics integration

Know these limits before promising a dashboard, because they shape what it can show.

  • Some dimension and metric pairs cannot combine
  • API quotas can stop a heavy refresh
  • High-traffic properties may return grouped rows
  • Refresh depends on one Google sign-in staying valid
  • User counts do not add up across date ranges
  • Older Universal Analytics data is no longer served

Our Power BI Google Analytics integration steps

Four stages take the work from a question list to a published report.

  1. List the questions

First we ask what marketing and sales want to know, since that decides which fields to pull.

  2. Pick the route

Then we weigh the direct connector against the BigQuery export, based on traffic and the detail required.

  3. Join web to business

Next we link campaigns, dates and regions to CRM and order tables, so visits meet revenue.

  4. Validate and publish

Finally we compare key totals with the Google interface and explain any gap before release.

Questions on Google Analytics data in Power BI

Does the Google Analytics connector in Power BI support GA4?

Yes. Microsoft's documentation states that the connector reads GA4 properties through Google's current data API. Universal Analytics properties stopped processing data, so old reports built on them need rebuilding. When we take over such a report, we map each old metric to its GA4 equivalent first, because several definitions changed along the way.

Why do Power BI numbers differ from Google Analytics?

Small gaps have a few common causes. The API may sample or group rows, time zones can differ, and user counts cannot be summed across days. Also, a report filter in Power BI may not match the one in Google. So we compare like for like during testing and write down the reason for each remaining difference.

Is a gateway needed for this Google Analytics integration in Power BI?

No gateway is needed for the connector itself. The Power BI service stores the Google sign-in and calls the API on schedule. If that sign-in expires or the person leaves, refresh stops. Therefore we suggest a shared marketing account with read access, which keeps the link alive when staff change.

Can web data join CRM data in one report?

Yes, and that is the main reason to do this work. Campaign names, dates and regions act as shared keys. With them, one page can show visits, leads and won revenue per campaign. The join is only as good as your tagging, though. So we often start by cleaning campaign naming rules.
