Looker to Power BI migration that keeps your definitions intact
Looker to Power BI migration moves a company's metrics, Explores and dashboards from Looker into Power BI semantic models and reports. LookML does not translate into DAX by any automatic route, so each definition needs a careful rewrite. Power BI Agency maps your LookML to a model inside your own Microsoft tenant, rebuilds the dashboards and compares results with Looker before sign-off.

What changes in a Looker to Power BI migration?
Looker is built around LookML, a modeling language that defines dimensions, measures and joins in code. Queries then run as SQL against your warehouse. Because the definitions live in one place, teams get consistent metrics.
Power BI reaches the same goal by another path. A semantic model holds tables, relationships and DAX measures. It can import data into memory or query the source directly. So the concept of a governed layer survives, but its form changes.
Your warehouse usually stays where it is. The move affects the modeling layer and the front end. Therefore most of the effort goes into rewriting definitions and rebuilding dashboards. For example, the LookML measures behind a Power BI sales dashboard become DAX measures in one shared model.

Looker building blocks and their Power BI counterparts
These pairs guide the mapping, although each needs judgment case by case.
| Looker | Power BI | Note |
|---|---|---|
| LookML views | Model tables | Columns and types need a review |
| LookML measures | DAX measures | Rewritten, not translated |
| Explores and joins | Relationships in the model | A star shape works best |
| Derived tables | Warehouse views or Power Query | Decide where the logic should live |
| Looks and dashboards | Reports and dashboards | Layouts get a redesign |
| Access filters | Row-level security | Rules need a new test |
| Schedules | Subscriptions | Recipients need remapping |
Is leaving Looker the right call for your team?
It depends on what you value. Looker suits teams that like modeling in code, with version control and SQL at the center. If that describes your analysts and they are content, a move may cost more than it returns.
Power BI fits well when the business already lives in Microsoft 365. For example, reports then sit beside Teams and Excel, and sign-in follows the same identity. Many companies also find it easier to give business users self-service in that setting.
We do not push either answer. On the assessment call we ask about your users, your warehouse and your skills. Then we say which way the facts point. For the platform decision itself, see our Power BI vs Looker comparison, or Power BI vs Looker Studio if your team uses the free tool.
Decisions we settle early when moving from Looker to Power BI
Three choices shape the whole project, so we make them first.
Import or DirectQuery
Looker queries the warehouse live. Power BI can do that too, or it can import data for speed. We test both on your volumes.
One model or several
A single shared model keeps metrics consistent. However, very different subject areas may deserve their own.
Where logic lives
Some LookML logic belongs back in the warehouse. As a result, other tools can reuse it later.
How our Looker to Power BI migration process works
The work runs in four stages, wave by wave.
Looker content inventory
First we list Explores, dashboards and schedules with their usage, so rarely opened items can retire.
Model mapping
We then map LookML definitions to tables and measures, and the quote fixes what is in scope.
Power BI build and demo
The model and reports take shape in your tenant, and each week we show them beside the Looker originals.
Validation and cutover
Finally, owners compare results for agreed periods, and then users switch to the new reports.
Questions about a Looker to Power BI migration
Can LookML convert to DAX automatically?
No, and we would not trust a claim that it can. The two languages express logic in different ways. A LookML measure wraps SQL, while a DAX measure works in filter context. So a person rewrites each definition and tests it. Simple sums go quickly, but complex measures take thought.
Is Looker Studio part of a migration from Looker to Power BI?
They are separate products, although the names are close. Looker is the modeling platform built on LookML. Looker Studio is a lighter reporting tool. If you use both, we list them separately, since each needs its own approach. The scope then states exactly which content moves.
Do we have to move our data warehouse too?
No. Power BI connects to the common cloud warehouses, and Microsoft documents each connector. Therefore your data can stay in place while the reporting layer changes. We check the connector's supported modes for your platform before we commit to a design.
What happens to version control after leaving Looker?
Teams that value Git in Looker often ask this. Power BI now offers project files and Git integration for workspaces, and Microsoft documents their current limits. We explain the options and help you choose a release process. Still, it works differently from LookML, so expect some adjustment.
Who does the work, and how do we begin?
Consultants at Power BI Agency do it. We are a small team, a division of Sataware Technologies and independent of Microsoft and Google. We also do not resell licenses. The service runs online. Call (480) 485-7373, and we reply within 2 hours.
