Power BI Amazon Athena integration for data held in S3
Power BI Amazon Athena integration lets a team report on files in Amazon S3 without copying them into a database first. Microsoft documents an Amazon Athena connector, and it works through the Athena ODBC driver and a data source name. So the setup has a few more parts than a plain database login. However, each part is simple once somebody owns it.
- Athena connector and driver
- Import or DirectQuery
- Scans kept small

How does Power BI Amazon Athena integration connect?
The author picks the Amazon Athena connector in Power BI Desktop and types a data source name. That name, the DSN, points at an Athena ODBC driver on the same machine. So the driver comes first, because the connector cannot run without it.
Then Power BI asks how to sign in. Microsoft's page lists two choices: the DSN configuration or an organizational account. After that, the navigator shows the data catalog, its databases and the tables inside them.
The connector supports both import and DirectQuery. Import copies the result into the model, so reports stay quick between refreshes. DirectQuery sends a query to Athena for each visual instead. As a result, the choice shapes both report speed and how often Athena runs.

Three parts every Athena report in Power BI relies on
We check these three on day one, because a gap in any of them stops refresh.
The ODBC driver
Amazon publishes the Athena ODBC driver. It must sit on the author's machine and also on the gateway server.
The data source name
A DSN stores the region, the workgroup and the output location. So the same DSN name must exist wherever the query runs.
The gateway
Scheduled refresh in the service runs through an on-premises data gateway. Therefore that machine needs the driver and the DSN too.
Why does query design matter for Athena data in Power BI?
Athena reads files in S3 each time a query runs. AWS commonly bills that work by the amount of data each query scans. So a careless report can cost more than a careful one, even with the same figures on screen.
We therefore shape the data before Power BI touches it. Partitions by date let a query skip old folders. Columnar file formats also help, because Athena then reads only the columns a query names. In addition, a view in Athena can hide joins and give columns plain names.
The storage mode follows from that. For example, a daily sales summary suits import, since one scheduled scan feeds every reader. A very large event table may suit DirectQuery over well partitioned data instead. We test both before we recommend one. When the files themselves need sorting out first, the Power BI Amazon S3 integration page covers bucket layout and access. Slow pages after launch fall under Power BI performance tuning.
Common faults in a Power BI Amazon Athena integration
When an Athena report fails or crawls, we look for these causes first.
- The gateway machine lacks the ODBC driver
- DSN names differ between desktop and gateway
- Queries scan whole tables instead of partitions
- The AWS role can read more than it should
- DirectQuery visuals fire too many queries
- Nobody watches what each refresh scans
Our steps for Power BI Amazon Athena integration
Four stages, with a weekly demo, keep the work easy to follow.
Map the data lake
First we learn which S3 folders and Athena tables matter, and who owns the AWS account.
Agree the scope
Then a written quote names the views, the model and the report pages, so the scope stays fixed.
Set up the route
We install the driver, create the DSN and configure the gateway, all inside your own tenant.
Tune and hand over
Finally, we check what each refresh scans and leave notes, because table layouts change over time.
Questions about Amazon Athena and Power BI reports
Does Power BI have a native Amazon Athena connector?
Yes. Microsoft's Power Query connector list includes Amazon Athena for Power BI semantic models and dataflows. However, the connector depends on the Amazon Athena ODBC driver, which the customer must install first. It then connects through a data source name. Microsoft's article lists the supported sign-in types and the current prerequisites.
Can Power BI use DirectQuery against Amazon Athena?
Yes, Microsoft lists both import and DirectQuery for this connector. DirectQuery keeps figures current, because each visual asks Athena at view time. Still, every click then runs a query in AWS. So we use it only when the tables have good partitions and the report has few visuals per page.
Does an Athena report need a gateway for refresh?
In practice, yes. The connector works through an ODBC driver and a DSN, and those live on a Windows machine. So the Power BI service reaches Athena through an on-premises data gateway that holds both. We set the gateway up on a server that stays switched on, not on a laptop.
How do we keep Athena costs under control?
Start with the data layout. Partitioned tables and columnar files let each query read less. Then pick import for anything that many people open, since one refresh serves all of them. We also review the queries Power BI sends. AWS publishes its current billing terms, so confirm the details there.
