Power BI Amazon Redshift integration across two clouds
Power BI Amazon Redshift integration lets a warehouse in AWS feed reports in the Microsoft cloud. Microsoft documents an Amazon Redshift connector that supports Import and DirectQuery for semantic models. So the two platforms can work together without a middle layer. However, cross-cloud traffic, cluster access and query cost all need a plan before the first dashboard ships.
- Native Redshift connector
- Import and DirectQuery
- Cross-cloud access plan

How does Power BI Amazon Redshift integration connect?
The author chooses the Amazon Redshift connector and enters the server address and database. Then Power BI asks for credentials and lists schemas and tables. Because Microsoft maintains the connector's documentation, setup follows a known path.
Network access is the first real question. A cluster that accepts connections from the internet, with proper rules, can serve the Power BI service directly. But many clusters sit in a private network. In that case a gateway on a machine inside that network carries the traffic.
Credentials come next. We ask for a dedicated reporting user with read rights on a reporting schema. As a result, no report can touch raw or staging tables by accident.

Choosing a storage mode for warehouse tables
A warehouse invites DirectQuery, but the right answer is often a mix.
Import for dimensions
Small descriptive tables load fast and rarely change. So we import them and keep slicers instant.
DirectQuery for huge facts
Very large tables can stay in the warehouse. However, each visual then sends a query, and the cluster must keep up.
Aggregations in between
A summary table answers most questions from memory. Then only rare drill-downs reach the warehouse itself.
What makes Redshift reports slow or expensive?
DirectQuery turns every click into SQL. A page with twenty visuals sends twenty queries, and a slicer change sends them again. Therefore a busy report can keep a cluster working hard all day.
We cut that load in a few ways. First, each page gets fewer, more useful visuals. Then we point the model at views that already join and filter. Also, summary tables absorb the common questions.
Data transfer between clouds matters as well. For example, a full import of a wide table moves a lot of data out of AWS on every refresh. So we import only the columns a report uses and refresh recent periods instead of all history.
Readiness checks for Power BI Amazon Redshift integration
Your AWS administrator and our consultant go through these together.
- Security groups allow the service or gateway
- A reporting schema holds report-ready views
- The reporting user cannot write or drop
- Sort and distribution keys suit report filters
- Refresh windows avoid heavy load jobs
- Someone monitors query queues after launch
How we deliver Power BI Amazon Redshift integration
Four stages take the warehouse from first connection to a model your team runs.
Review the warehouse
First we read the schemas with your data engineer and learn which tables the business already trusts.
Put scope in writing
Then a quote lists the views, the model and the pages. Nothing starts until you approve it.
Build and tune
We build the model in your Microsoft tenant, watch the queries it sends and tune the slow ones.
Transfer ownership
Finally, your team gets the design notes and a session on how to add tables safely.
Questions about Redshift behind Power BI
Is there a native Power BI connector for Amazon Redshift?
Yes. Microsoft lists an Amazon Redshift connector in the Power Query connector reference. It supports Import and DirectQuery for Power BI semantic models. Therefore no third-party driver layer is involved in a standard setup. Connector details change from time to time, so we read Microsoft's page again at the start of each project.
Does Power BI need a gateway to reach Redshift?
Only when the cluster is not reachable from the Power BI service. A cluster in a private subnet needs a gateway on a machine that can see it. Otherwise the service connects directly, given the right firewall rules. We agree the route with your security team, because they own that decision.
Should we use Import or DirectQuery with Redshift?
Start with Import where the data fits, since it gives the fastest pages. Then use DirectQuery for tables that are too large or must be current. Many models combine both. We test real report pages against your cluster before we commit to a design, so the choice rests on evidence.
Can we keep our AWS data platform and still use Power BI?
Yes. Plenty of companies run data in AWS and reporting in Microsoft 365. The connector exists for that case. However, identity and network setup span two clouds, so they take more care. We document both sides, and your administrators keep full control of access.
How do we start a Redshift reporting project with you?
Begin with the free 30-minute assessment. A consultant from our small team joins the call. Power BI Agency is a division of Sataware Technologies and is independent of Microsoft. We work online and reply within 2 hours. The phone number is (480) 485-7373.
