Power BI Amazon S3 integration through the right middle layer
Power BI Amazon S3 integration gets files in a storage bucket into a semantic model, but not through a direct bucket connector. Microsoft's Power Query connector list has no entry for Amazon S3 itself. So the data travels by another documented route. For example, Amazon Athena can query the files, or Microsoft Fabric can reach the bucket with a shortcut or a copy job.
- No direct bucket connector
- Athena or Fabric routes
- Files become tables

How does Power BI Amazon S3 integration work without a connector?
A bucket stores objects. It does not answer queries by itself. Therefore something must sit between the files and the report, and that layer decides speed and upkeep.
One route stays inside AWS. Amazon Athena runs SQL over files in a bucket, and Microsoft documents an Amazon Athena connector for Power BI. So the report reads Athena tables while the files remain where they are.
Another route leans on Microsoft Fabric. A OneLake shortcut can point at an S3 bucket, which makes the files appear in a lakehouse. Also, a Fabric pipeline can copy bucket files into OneLake on a schedule.

Routes from an S3 bucket to a report
We compare these options with you before any build work starts.
| Route | Where data sits | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Athena connector | Stays in the bucket | Teams already using Athena |
| OneLake shortcut | Stays in the bucket | Fabric users who want no copy |
| Fabric pipeline copy | Copied into OneLake | Scheduled loads with history |
| Warehouse load | Copied into a warehouse | Heavy joins and large volume |
| Manual download | Local files | One-off checks only |
Which bucket layouts cause trouble later?
Buckets fill up fast. Applications write logs, exports and backups side by side. Then a reporting project arrives, and nobody can say which prefix holds the clean data.
So we ask for one prefix per dataset and one format per prefix. Parquet is the better choice where you can get it, because it keeps column types. CSV and JSON still work, but they need more checks.
Date-based folders help every route. For example, Athena can skip whole partitions, and a copy job can pick up only new days. As a result, both cost and refresh time stay under control as the bucket grows. For SQL over those same files, the Power BI Amazon Athena integration page explains the query engine route in detail. Joining bucket data with other systems is part of Power BI data integration services.
Pitfalls in a Power BI Amazon S3 integration
These six issues account for most rework.
- Access keys pasted into a report file
- A policy that lets reporting read every bucket
- Mixed file formats under one prefix
- No partitioning on large datasets
- Schema changes with no notice to analysts
- Two copies of the data with no clear owner
Our Power BI Amazon S3 integration process
The project follows four stages, and we show results at a demo every week.
Inspect the bucket
First we review prefixes, formats and volumes with your AWS owner, so we know what we are dealing with.
Select the route
Then we recommend one row from the table above. The written quote records it with the datasets in scope.
Build the path
We set up the chosen layer and the semantic model. The Power BI side lives in your own Microsoft tenant.
Explain the upkeep
Finally, we hand over notes on access, cost drivers and refresh, because buckets keep changing after launch.
Questions about S3 files and Power BI
Does Power BI have a native Amazon S3 connector?
Not in Power Query's connector list, as far as Microsoft documents it today. The list does include Amazon Athena and Amazon Redshift. Microsoft Fabric also documents an S3 shortcut for OneLake and an S3 connector for pipelines. So there are supported routes, but each one runs through a layer between the bucket and the report.
Which route suits a team that does not use Fabric?
Athena is usually the natural choice, since it lives beside the bucket in AWS. Power BI then uses the Athena connector. However, Athena needs table definitions and the right driver setup. We help your AWS owner define those tables and then test refresh from the Power BI service.
Is it safe to give Power BI access to a bucket?
It is, when access stays narrow. We ask for a role or a user that can read only the reporting prefix. Also, keys should live in the connection settings and never inside a shared file. Your AWS administrator creates and owns those credentials, so control stays with you.
Can S3 data join with data from Microsoft systems?
Yes. Once the files surface as tables, the semantic model treats them like any other source. For example, web logs from a bucket can sit beside sales from Dynamics 365. Still, shared keys such as customer codes must match, and we map those early.
