Power BI vs Amazon QuickSight: follow your cloud
Power BI vs Amazon QuickSight compares the reporting tools of two large cloud providers. QuickSight is a browser-based service from Amazon Web Services that connects closely to data stored in AWS. Power BI is Microsoft's platform, with a desktop authoring app, a rich data model and deep ties to Microsoft 365. For most companies, the cloud that already holds their data points to the natural choice.

Power BI vs Amazon QuickSight: what matters most?
Both tools build dashboards, refresh them on a schedule and share them through the web. They also both embed visuals inside other applications. So on a feature checklist, they look alike.
The meaningful difference is the home each one expects. QuickSight assumes your data sits in AWS services such as Redshift, Athena or S3. Power BI assumes a Microsoft setting, with Azure, Fabric and Microsoft 365 close at hand.
Each can reach across to the other cloud, but that adds network setup and sometimes data transfer cost. Therefore the first question is simple: where does your data already live, and where do your people sign in?

What do the two services look like side by side?
The table stays general on purpose, because both providers update their products often.
| Area | Power BI | Amazon QuickSight |
|---|---|---|
| Provider | Microsoft | Amazon Web Services |
| Authoring | Desktop app on Windows, plus web editing | Web browser |
| In-memory engine | Import mode in the semantic model | SPICE |
| Calculations | DAX measures | Calculated fields |
| Native data strengths | Azure, Fabric, SQL Server and Microsoft 365 | Redshift, Athena, S3 and other AWS sources |
| Access and identity | Microsoft Entra accounts and workspace roles | AWS identity options and QuickSight users |
| Embedding | Power BI Embedded | QuickSight embedded analytics |
When is QuickSight the sensible pick?
QuickSight suits teams that have built their data platform on AWS. The service sits in the same account as the warehouse and the data lake. As a result, permissions, networking and billing all stay in one place.
It also appeals to software companies that embed dashboards in their own product. The service scales without servers to manage, and its reader pricing can follow actual use. For an application with many occasional viewers, that model can work well.
Finally, there is no desktop tool to distribute. Authors work in a browser on any operating system. So a team on Macs or Linux faces no extra hurdle.
When does Power BI serve better than QuickSight?
Power BI serves best where staff already work in Microsoft tools. Reports appear in Teams, connect to Excel and use the same sign-in as email. Because of that, business users tend to adopt it with little pushing.
The modeling layer is deeper as well. A shared semantic model with relationships and DAX measures supports complex finance and operations logic. One definition then feeds many reports, which keeps figures consistent across departments.
Skills are widely available too. Many analysts have met Power Query in Excel, and training material is plentiful. Therefore a company can usually grow its own authors instead of depending on a few specialists. For connecting Amazon data stores to Microsoft's tool, see Power BI data integration services.
Power BI vs Amazon QuickSight: how to choose well
Four checks cover the ground for most companies.
Locate the data
First note which cloud holds your warehouse and lake. Reporting close to the data avoids extra transfer and setup.
Look at daily tools
Then consider what business users open each day. A reporting tool that lives beside their email and chat gets used more.
Define the audience
Internal staff, external customers and embedded users each change the license picture, so count them separately.
Prototype both
Finally, build one real dashboard in each service. After a short trial, the better fit is usually obvious.
Power BI vs Amazon QuickSight: common questions
Can Power BI connect to data in AWS?
Yes. Microsoft lists connectors for sources such as Amazon Redshift and Amazon Athena, and we check the current connector documentation before we rely on one. Depending on the network design, a gateway may be necessary. So a company with data in AWS can still report in Power BI, although the setup takes some planning.
Is QuickSight cheaper than Power BI?
It depends entirely on who uses the reports and how often. The two providers price in different ways, and both revise their plans. We therefore avoid quoting figures. Instead, model your own case: count authors, regular readers and occasional viewers, then compare the current published plans from each provider for those numbers.
Can a company on AWS still choose Power BI?
Yes, and many do. When business users live in Microsoft 365, the adoption benefit can outweigh the cross-cloud setup. A common pattern keeps the warehouse in AWS and connects Power BI to it. However, test the refresh speed and the network path early, because those two points decide whether it feels smooth.
Which tool is better for embedding in our own product?
Both offer embedding, and both can serve customers who never see the vendor's portal. The better choice depends on your application's cloud, your identity setup and your viewer counts. We suggest a small proof of concept in each. That exercise exposes the practical limits much faster than reading feature pages.
Do you work with QuickSight as well as Power BI?
No. We focus on Power BI and state that plainly. Even so, we are independent of Microsoft and do not resell licenses, so we have no reason to push a poor fit. Power BI Agency is a division of Sataware Technologies. A free 30-minute assessment call is the place to talk your case through.
